My phone is freezing about once every day, usually when I try to open my text message inbox. It takes an extremely long time (longer than usual) to pick up signal when it turns on. It often says "sim card registration failed" and often will entirely miss calls without having logged the missed call or ringing.

The phone at regualr functionality should acquire details from the network least without errors.Usually with phones, only phone to phone materials of texts or voice are capable fo gettting betwen devices. once a media type gets to another phoen that were corrupted considering the method of transssion would require deletion especially sicne phones are least exploratbel between message delivery and reception.
i have the same problem with my nokia n70. i think its because of a visrus, cause im on inthernet downloading stuff 24-7. when ive reseted it via *#7370# it worked. you should try it. but be sure to back up your files via pc, because it erases all of ur content.. good luck
for the problem of it being slow to recognize it when you're typing, mine does that too..but only when my phone's on silent or vibrate..so i'm not sure why that would be a reason, but that's what it does.
