Since you didn't specify the model of your Uniden DECT 6.0 system I can only suggest you select it from the list beginning here to download a copy of the manual.

Answering machine is set for 4 rings to pick up what to change the number to 6 rings how do I do that?

What model answering machine do you have? On some units, there is a physical switch on the side or back to set the number of rings. The options can be limited to 2, 4 or TS (10 rings). This is the case for my AT&T 1337 digital answering system. On others, you will need to access the Menu and look for an Answering System menu item. Enter the sub-menu and look for the number of rings option. Increase this value and save the setting. You may find additional number of rings settings.

Please add a comment with the make and model for a better solution. I hope this gets you started.

How do I extend number of rings on my handset

What product would that be Ann as not product is listed in the question. I would suspect the answering machine settings is the place to look to increase the number of rings before the answering function kicks in. Maybe you could provide the make and model number to help us figure out a more specific answer

Panasonic number ring

Answering system settings
Number of rings before the unit answers a call. You can change the number of times the phone rings "Ring count"before the unit answers calls. You can select 2 to 7 rings, or "Toll saver".The default setting is "4 rings"."Toll saver": The unit's answering system answers at the end of the 2nd ring when new messages have been recorded, or at the end of the 5th ring when there are no new messages. If you call your phone from outside to listen to new messages (page 34), you know that there are no new messages when the phone rings for the 3rd time. You can then hang up without being charged for the call.

How to set number of rings

Use Ring Select to choose how many times
the line will ring before the system
answers a call. Set for 2, 4 or Toll Saver.
When you set the system for Toll Saver, it
answers after four rings when you have no
new messages, and after two rings when
you have new messages.
1. Press and hold "set up" for about two
seconds. The system announces the
current ring selection.
2 Press and release "ANNC/SKIP" or "MEMO/REPEAT"
until the system announces your ring
selection.
3 Press and release "Play/Stop" to exit

Need more rings

You have to change the rings from the voice mail server. If you don't know your way around the server, its best to get a local NEC tech although it is fairly simple to navigate. Depends on your skill. Typical default password for the server is NEC

I have a discontinued phone and have lost the instruction book and need to figure out why the fax machine is not letting the answering machine pick up.

you have both the fax machine and the answering machine on the same phone line.
The fax machine and the answering machine are set to answer in a certain number of rings.
In your case the fax machine is set to answer the line in less rings than the answering machine. You have to increase the number of rings of your fax so that the answering machine will work.

Hangs up after 2 seconds into recording message

SETTING THE RINGS TO ANSWER
This setting allows you to select the number of rings before the answering system answers a call.

At idle status, hold down the volume "UP" button over two seconds to enter the ring times setting of answering. The answering system announces, "ring time two" (the default is 2).

To change the rings to answer, press and release the "PREVIOUS" button (<<) or the "NEXT" button (>>) and the answering system announces a number such as "2, 1, toll save, 9...” OR "2, 3, 4...", if you select the toll save and the digit LED light shows a “γ”, the answering system announces “toll save”.

After choosing a number, press the “PLAY/STOP” button one time to store the rings to answer, and the answering system confirms the setting and returns to the idle status.

NOTE: when the machine fails to operate properly, just unplug the power for 10 seconds, and redo the settings.

Panasonic 816 phone system

What you need to do is set the number of rings before answer on the phone to a number greater than the number of rings it takes before AT&T answers (for example, set AT&T to answer after 4 rings and the phone to answer after 5). Some phones have switches on them that allow you set the number of rings. Some make you set the number through their software. Look on the body of the phone, particularly the sides, for that switch and set it to the biggest number it offers.
