Dust can get inside the unit and land on the lens making certain the disc can't be read. Also a small rubber belt opens the door. That can break and fall off. Both are easily corrected by cleaning the lens, but you will have to go inside first find the belt that opens the draw and replace it. Or you can take it to the nearest repair shop. Belt replacement is not expensive nor is cleaning.
Make sure that everything is plug into the right spot. If the amp comes on and nothing else, I will check the power cords. Also check the power buttons for each unit and make sure they are on. Also listen for a click sound from the amp when you turn it on. You will here it about 2 to 7 seconds after you turn it on with the main power button. If you do not here it, then you have a problem with the amp. One of the channels is bad and you will need to take to a repair shop for repair.

Does FM work? If so, I would expect AM to work also. Old AM circuits are pretty resilient. If you rotate the tuning dial in AM mode, can you hear distinct changes in the sound (noise) coming from the speaker(s)? I'm thinking there's no wire attached to the AM antenna on the back. Without the antenna, you might not get any audio output.
Try a lens cleaner cd, as when the lens gets misaligned or if it's quite old, it will find it harder to read a DVD as the tracks are much closer together than that of a VCD as they are cd's and their tracks are wider apart and easier to read.
