Power problem on Dell Dimension 5100

My son powered off the Dell 5100 by the push button which was absolutely normal, and it now can't power up. The green LED is lit on the motherboard. Green light on motherboard works. Just a little over 3 years old and out of warranty. I replaced the power cord and used another power extension cord. Problem remains the same.

Give me hints. Thank you a million.

Pagebor; Thank you for help. Yesterday afternoon the Dell 5100 booted up and everything returned to normal. I told my son if he shut it down, it would not reboot. And it was true.

I searched if any capacitor has visual breakdown. It doesn't have. I toggled the 115/230v switch, and removed the mobo battery and put it back, it just can't reboot.

I told to my son, if you turn on the next day (i.e. today), it would reboot and be normal.

This problem happened one or two days after my son upgraded the Dell 5100 from XP to Vista Ultimate and with the help of Microsoft Assitance installed the SP1. Then the non-boot problem kicked in. Before he installed the Vista, Microsfot check says it is barely compatible, while Dell check says the Dimension 5100 is not compatible for Vista at all.

Today we will format the C drive if it can be rebooted, and then reveret it to its original XP.

If I am right, then, the Vista Ultimate is causing the problem, in flooding the Cache, jamming the RAM etc. Once a day's time clears all its content, the system can reboot itself. We'll see.

Any suggestion? and tell me why this is happening?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hi, Everybody;

After we formated the C drive, removing Vista, and reinstalled XP, now the Dell Dimension 5100 returned to normal. It just doesn't have any hardware problem, such as mobo, PSU or RAM.

if your PC have restart button then open your PC and check the power cable slots and change them into a reset mode removing reset cable to reset slots and attach to power slot. Then you can power your pC with reset button. If you can open front case then you can outside the button .

Need to find a control circuit for the push button to start the PC

There isn't any control circuit, unless you mean on the system board. The power switch is just a simple normally-open pushbutton switch that's wired to a 2-pin plug (or 2 pins in a larger plug) that connects to the system board. When you push the button it signals the system board to turn on the power supply and start up. If you're having the problem that your computer isn't starting, you may have a bad power supply or system board.

No power to Dell demension 5100 desktop

If there is no activity whatsoever when you press the power button on than you have likely blown the internal power supply fuse. This will need a technician to repair.

Can't power up Dimension 5100

Is this a DELL system? E series ?
Well , you'll have to reseat the memory chip on the motherboard and check for other power connectors.. but please try this only if you're sure that there is NO display at all and the system will just not start up!
Please make sure you disconnect any peripheral devices and the power cable before opening the chassis!

Dell Dimension 5100 power up problem

I had same issue with dimension 5100 Desktop. I work at Circuit City as the Lead Technician. I found that swapping the power supply did fix the problem! When i initially tested the power supply with a standard power supply tester, the power supply appeared normal. But after swapping the PC works great. Thx for the good idea!

Power supply ?

I'd recommend purchasing a new power supply.

Your Dell Dimension 5100 comes stock with a 305W power supply. This is a bare-minimum wattage that will only handle what they ship on the system & not much more. You're better off upgrading the power supply with a compatible after-market model.

You can go to a PC parts store in your area and take your chances...but they're usually more expensive then Internet sources (they've got to pay for their brick-n-mortar store overhead).

Here's a link for a very inexpensive replacement 400W power supply for your Dell Dimension 5100:

http://www.affordablesurplus.com/dell-5100-5150-power-supply.asp

This particular site offers $8 Flat-rate shipping & a 1 year warranty. Your power supply is only $49.99 - you might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere, but that's the best I could find with a quick Google search.

If my answer helped you, please provide feedback :-)

Good luck!

Dell dimension 5100 won't power on

might be a problem with the power button...try exchanging the power adapter and the reset adapter in your motherboard...this would become:

RESET BUTTON: as power button.

view your manual on where to find this adapters in your board.
