The screen is floppy on my Compaq Presario CQ70 and needs tightening can you inform me on how I can resolve this please ?

Check the screen mounting screws on the back of the laptop near the hinges, make sure they are tight.
If these screws ar tight and the screen is loose then the hinges need to be replaces because there are no adjustments available to tighten them.
Replacement hinges may be available from one of these WEB sites.

Screen hinges are too loose. how do I tighten the hinges and thus take out the play.

Unfortunately, you can't tighten the hinges. All you can do is replace them if they lose their grip and loosen up. They aren't expensive (here's one source on eBay as a sample, and there are others), and it's not too difficult to change them. HP has a document here explaining the procedure. Good luck with the repair, and thanks for using Fixya!

My husband tried to fix my machine

It sounds to me that your husband may have loosened one of the cables while repairing the hinge, i would suggest you take it to a local repair shop, you shouldent get charged more then 200$ at the very most (I would charge less then 150$ for this type of repair at my shop, but i cant speak for jacksonville).

Most likely nothing needs to be replaced but HP will overcharge you for typically sub par work.

UNABLE TO CLOSE LAPTAP NO FREE MOVEMENT ON LEFT SIDE

I believe that's the hinge screws on the computer that's too tight. If you have screwdrivers that can fit into the hole of the left hinge, you can just loosen them up & that should fix it. If you're not sure what to do, just take it to a local store and have them loosen them up.

Hope this helps.

It sounds like the hinge itself is broken. I have a relative with exactly the same problem, her laptop screen became floppy and didnt stay in the upright position. The hinges for the screen are complicated in that they appear to come as a top/bottom part already joined together, and need to be replaced as such. The metal used for the hinges is really flimy and easily snaps. this sounds like what has happened to yours. The problem is that is appears to be not econimcally viable to repair, and your probably better off scrapping it or buying another with say;.. a cracked screen and doing a swap-over of parts to get one fully working one (thats what I did)
