I had a similar problem with my SanDisk 8 GB pen-drive recently. The system did recognize the pen-drive but asked for a format when trying to open. I was not able to format it either. It's unfortunate that this don't have a fix. What I did was, I took it back to the dealer as I was under warranty time. He realized the complaint and replaced the item with a new one.
Pen-drives usually have a long warranty period (SanDisk have 5 years). So if you are under warranty, take it back to your dealer. He will replace it for you. If you are out of warranty too, you may take it to the dealer and ask him what's next?
Hope this one solved your problem. If you have additional doubts, please come back to us. P.S: If the solution is helpful, please accept the solution. Regards,Sunny.
Copy all the files from the pen-drive to your 'C:' drive.
Open "My Computer".
Right-mouse click on the icon for the pen-drive.
Click "Format".
Choose "quick-format".
When the "format" completes, it should show the full size.
Copy all the files back onto the pen-drive.
