After 4 years of good operation the sound from the unit has suddenly gone. The video works fine but there is no sound from any of the outputs including FM or AM radio. Any suggestions?
intermittent problem sometimes it will be ok after several power on or restart of avr.And sometimes it doesnt work at all. Is there a shorted or open circuit that might be causing the problem?...intermittent problem sometimes it will be ok after several power on or restart of avr.And sometimes it doesnt work at all. I have an ancient Onkyo Quartz Synthesizer Tuner Amplifier RI. I am unable to get sound from the cd player (nothing has moved, been distrupted, etc.). In the past, I would occasionaly hit a button (video -1, video-2 etc) and not get suds, but after some random button hitting, I cannot get it to work (get sound) again. Any suggestions? Thinking it may have to do with the APR SYsyem slection (only lit when the FM tuner is selected) but can't figure out how to reset. This 12 year old receiver was sold for about 1000 dollar when on the market. from about 2002.
See what they wrote in these days: Onkyo TX DS797 black review CNET
These units *(if I remember correctly) had a problem with a memory IC in the surround porcessing section that would show up initially as popping and would eventually end up with no sound at all. This is a straightforward repair that involves replacing the IC with a new one (different manufacturer). The problem is that this is a surface mounted IC and is difficult to replace without damaging the underlying PC board. This is NOT a DYI repair. Have this unit checked by an authorized Onkyo service center.
does not sound like the fuse. its easy to check. unplug unit and remove the cowling / shroud of the unit. the internal fuse will look like a car fuse. the old round style about 1" long and 1/4" round. sounds like a bigger problem. hope this helps.
this could be the pre amp transistor or the power amp that needs replacing
the pre amp transistor is cheap but the power amp is not
if you did not crank it , then it is probably just the transistor that needs replacing
Have you made sure the receiver's INPUT SELECTOR is set to "Video 2"? I know it seems like a stupid question, but worth mentioning as many folks would set the receiver on TV, which would not work unless the signal was also plugged into a "TV input" in back of the receiver. If your setting is correct, try running the TV cable sound temporarily into the receiver's DVD input, which we know does work. If you still don't get cable TV sound when the receiver is set to "DVD", then you have a problem with the TV cable audio portion. Most receivers would fail completely, rather than have only one input fail, so my guess is that there is a hookup or switching error somewhere.
