They help by keeping the stylus from permanantly scratching the glass screen (a costly repair). It is most needed for those that use the unit for writing vs. tapping. Areas like the scrollbar in IE and where you commonly write will be the most used therefore most likely to get scratched up. It will be very annoying once it gets scratched and will stand out like a brick on your nose.

When you apply the screen protector, try to flatten it out with a CC as you apply it.
