Marvel model 61WC Wine cooler

My Marvel is 7 years old and compressor stopped working. Does anyone know how to fix instead of spending $1500 for a new one that will not even match the one sitting next to it?

If the unit was made after 2000, there is a solid state control in the back that you can test. If it was made before then, it will have capillary tube style thermsotat that you can test.
Made after 2000:
First, pull the unit out to access the back lower area and disconnect the power. Remove the lower backing to access the mechanical area. There will be 2-inch square back box with seven terminals and 4 dip switches. Disconnect the red and black wires from terminals # 3 and 2 respectively and connect them together (this bypasses the control). Plug the unit in...if it runs you need a part of or all parts of the control.

Made before 2000. With power disconnected, remove the front grill to get access to the thermostate (usually on the right side). It will have up to three wires connected to it and a sensing line. Leave the green (ground) wire as is (if connected), disconnect the other two wires and connect them together or run a jumper. Plug the unit in...if it runs then you need a new thermostat (only one part).

If the compressor does not run but the condenser fan does...something is wrong with the compressor.

You can also call the factory at 800-428-6644 and ask for technical assistance. They can assist you with further troubleshooting and/or finding a servicer near you. They should still have parts to repair that unit.

Hi...I found this post which is about a year old referring to a problem with a Marvel fridge (power to light, but compressor won't turn on):

Made before 2000. With power disconnected, remove the front grill to get access to the thermostate (usually on the right side). It will have up to three wires connected to it and a sensing line. Leave the green (ground) wire as is (if connected), disconnect the other two wires and connect them together or run a jumper. Plug the unit in...if it runs then you need a new thermostat (only one part).

This described my problem perfectly, thanks! So I need a new thermostat. My question is, do I have to unsolder the sensing line and solder in the new one? I can't see how to disconnect the thermostat without unsoldering it. At the back end, it goes in behind the insulation which is glued in.

Why does my wine cooler run too cold?

If after adjusting your thermostat to desired temp and is still cooling. The thermostat is bad or your relay is bad
If you disconnect the thermostat and the compressor stops it most likely a bad thermostat
If you disconnect the relay from
The thermostat and it stay running it is the relay. It is sticking
If possible store you wine somewhere else and shut the unit down and unplug for 10 to 20 minutes this may cause some melt of condensation some water may be on the floor if is to cold
This may also reset the system.

Marvel 61wc wine cooler turns on, but doesn't cool

If you can hear the compressor running and there is no cooling happening your unit has either lost it's refrigerant due to a leak or the compressor is completly worn out (or both). If you just hear the condenser fan running (air blowing), then maybe the compressor just has bad electricals (starting relay, overoad, run capactor) or it has developed a bad winding and will need to be replaced.

If you know you have lost refrigerant the repair will be quite costly and you should consider replacement. If you feel it is a failure of the small electrical parts for the compressor, repair would be more cost effective.

You can get further trouble-shooting assistance and order parts direct from the factory at 800-223-3900.

You can look up a local servicer on their web-site at
Should you desire to attempt electrical repair yourself, reply to me and I will provide further troubleshooting assistance or you can contact Marvel Customer Service at the number above. Good-Luck, Subdriver

I have a client with a ten year old Marvel 24'' built in wine cooler, and the weater stripping is falling off. I can not find a model # anywhere. Derek

Dear Dereck,

Does your client have any idea how old the unit is? What do you mean by "weather stripping"? If you need a door gasket, all their 24" wide units (except ADA height) use the same gaskets. Part number 42241280 for the white and 42243906 for the black. You can order direct from the factory at 800-223-3900 (they are in EST in Michigan) should you need something else, describe the unit to their customer service personnel and they should be able to assist you. My marvel wine cooler is 9 years old and no longer runs. The light works but nothing else runs. Might this be the thermostat? iif so where would I ge a replacement and would would it cost?

This could very well be the thermostat (pre-2000) or part of the temperature control system (2000 to 2009) which has three parts: The thermsitor (usually the culprit), the potentiometer (connected the the control dial) or the control board. Call the factory at 800-223-3900 with your serial number (to identify which control it uses) and you can buy the part direct from them. The control kit is about $150.00, the old style thermostat about $100,00 and if it is just the thermsistor, it's about $50.00 (I haven't checked their prices in awhile)

Humidity and temp control not working.unit is 12yr old

The 61WC does not have humidity control in it unless it was added after the factory. The old style mechanical control is still available from the factory at 800-223-3900 PN 42241702 (ask them to double check my memory on the part number)

Marvel 61wc temperature will not go below 67 degrees F. Ice has accumulated on the back wall on the coil.

The 61 WC is a cycle defrost/plate sensing control. If your unit was manufactured before 2001 it will use an electric/mechancal thermostat that has a capillary tube that senses temperature. If it was made after, it will use a solid state control box that has a "thermsitor" sensing temperature and a potentiometer for user input (OFF through 7). If the unit runs constantly, and does not reach desired is low on freon due to a leak. This will be evidenced by ice build-up where the freon first enters the evaporator plate and no where else. You will have to have a technician fix the leak and recharge the unit. Don't wait to long to ge this corrected. If the unit runs too long with a low charge it could draw air and contaminants into the system and the compressor will get damaged.

I hope this helps.

Wine cooler doesn't cool properly

Few things to check here. If the compressor is not running then the problem may be a bad thermostat or the compressor start device (ptc starter). Most common would be the thermostat on wine coolers. Also need to check if the fan is running. If everything is running then you have a sealed system problem. If the fan is the only thing that is not running that will cause a no cool situation.
