How to check the battery

How to check the battery status while using the camera. It shows so briefly in the display when the camera is turned on, it's hard to tell. Is there anyway to show during use?

Also what is the icon in the upper left hand corner of the display. the manual says it is "recording mode," but today it's pink and I don't get it.
