Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S90 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Camera that I've had for years wont power on except in Review mode.

When I power the camera on, it will only come on in the "review" mode.
Camera powers off as soon as I turn the dial to "autoshoot" or any other shooting options.

Battery is fine.

any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Thanks, Trudy

Camera will not power up unless in review mode, I was told by online tech to pull all batteries and reset camera, I'll try but i think this is the answer to my issue.

just took a photo of my daughter and the camera worked fine. Turned off the camera and then a few minutes later would not power on. Can review pictures and use menu features, but cannot turn on to take pictures or video in any of the modes! Is there an at home solution? I saw someone posted that you can reset the camera, how is this done?

Same exact problem here. Will not power on unless in review mode, and shuts down as soon as you change to any other selection. I bought the camera 4 years ago, and it has worked well. We are now living in Australia, and I am sending a service request to Sony Australia. I will check back if/when I get an answer.

I've had my camera for 4 yrs. as well and last night experienced the same problem. Battery OK, powers on in review mode, but as soon as you switch to any other function, I loose power. Already have a newer cybershot, but this model takes better low light pics....hate to spend a lot of money on a repair.. what would be the approx. cost?

Canon A720is turns on, but lens will not extend

I had the exact same problem. Since my camera is out of warranty, I decided to try to fix it myself; figuring the cost of repairing it would be close to the cost of a new, better camera. If yours is still under warranty, let Canon fix it for the cost of shipping.

I unscrewed all of the screws and carefully pried open the back of the camera. Part of it will come apart easily, but for the part that wouldn't, I slid a razorblade into the crack between the pieces and used it to separate the pieces.

I was shocked by what I found. The "mechanism" for switching between picture and review mode, appears to consist of a tiny black piece of something (doesn't look like metal, but I assume it's conductive). The physical switch that you operate on the back of the camera, appears to push this away from the circuit board. When that happens, the camera goes into review mode.

I assume that over time, this flimsy piece of whatever begins to wear out and eventually won't return to the circuit board. I slipped a small screwdriver under this piece and bent it back towards the circuit board.

That did the trick, The camera now functions as it's supposed to with one exception. Now, when I go into review mode, the lens won't retract (although it will when I power the camera down). Personally, I'm fine with that, because the lens going in and out is a huge waste of battery.

One thing I learned from this is that when you leave your camera inactive for long periods of time, make sure it's in picture mode, as this should reduce the strain on the flexible "switch".

Ditto for me as well. Did anybody have an adapter that lets you power the camera directly? I'm thinking about opening it, but who knows? 5 year obsolescence time-out?

Sony cybershot dsc-s600

Hi, here is a temporary solution that might work for you as it did for me:

1: turn on the camera in picture/movie review mode
2: turn the screen off (not the camera)
3: change from review picture/movie mode to take picture/movie mode
4: turn the screen back on.

You should now be able to take pictures and record.

Hope this is of some help.
