Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Maytag Gas Dryer MDG8600AWW does not heat up. Could it be the glow bar ignition? When the dryer was beginning to fail, it would heat up for a few minutes then the heat would die. Now it doesn't heat up at all.

If it was heating occasionally after you first noticed the problem, most likely not the ignition glow element. I am having the same problem and am looking at replacing the gas valve. I used to be a Sears Repairman. I verified that both magnetic coils are energizing when they are supposed to, but often the gas won't flow. Also, I hear a clicking noise internally on the gas valve.

I first replaced the two magnetic coils, as they are only $20. That solved my problem. I recall now that the coils, which have an encapsulated spool of thin wire, can have a break in the wire that only separates when it warms up, and the wires contact again when it cools down. That is why it may work and then quits.

Maytag Gas Dryer doesn't heat up

The igniter is the part that ignites the gas in the Maytag gas dryer. Long time a go the dryers use to have a pilots. The pilots where on all the time, even when the dryer was not been use.

This wasted a lot of gas and a new design was needed. That is when the igniter or glow bar as is also known, came to be. A bad igniter could be the reason for your Maytag gas dryer not heating.

The radiant sensor is a small black box that attaches to the combustion funnel. The job of the radiant sensor is to allow the igniter to glow until it is real hot, then it shuts the igniter off and opens the gas valve to start the heating process. A bad radiant sensor could the the reason for your Maytag gas dryer not heating.

The gas valve has two coils or solenoids. These coils job is to open the gas chambers inside of the gas valve.

When one of the coils goes bad, the symptom is that the igniter glows, but the gas valve won't open to let the gas flow through the gas chamber to be ignited.

A bad set of coils could be the reason for your Maytag gas dryer not heating.

The hi-limit thermostat is located on top of the combustion funnel, and its job is to open the circuit to the gas valve if the airflow to the dryer is restricted for any reason.

The cycling thermostat is use to control the temperature inside of the dryer. It is factory preset at 155 degree, in other words it will open the circuit to the gas valve when the temperature reaches 155 degrees.

This thermostat is opening and closing all the time the dryer running. A bad cycling thermostat could be the reason for your Maytag gas dryer not heating.

The timer is the part that direct the electricity to the other parts in the dryer. This part works very hard and the contacts wear out and some times they burn out. If the timer contacts won't close, the dryer will not heat.

The motor switch is another safety device that only closes the heating circuit when the motor is running. When the motor is not running the circuit of the gas valve is open and the dryer will not heat. A bad motor switch could be the cause for your Maytag gas dryer not heating.

As you could see, there are a lot of parts inside of the dryer that have to be in good working condition for the dryer to produce heat.

Dryer turns on. no heat and timer does not advance?

sounds like glow bar or photo sensor not working properly. should be access panel to veiw ignition system, if glow bar turns white hot when dryer is started, try to clean face of photo senser and re-start. unplug dryer before cleaning sensor. timer will not start until dryer comes up to temp.

Maytag Neptune MDG 5500 AWQ heats sporatically

your dryer has a safety feature that it will not run or heat when the door is opened. It is so no gas fumes are exhauseted into your home. Once the safety is engaged, It will not allow the dryer to restart for a short while. It should clear itself after only a few minutes. Hope this helps, good luck.

Maytag gas dryer wont heat

Since your hot surface ignitor is glowing, that means it is trying to heat, or that all the temp. switches are good and the timer is sending the signal. First check that there is actually gas pressure to the dryer. But the common problem is the coils on the gas valve. There are two, called the booster/holding coil, and the secondary coil. They are purchased as a set (part #279834 / $20.00) if it is the same as my mdg8600aww model. If that doesn't work, then likely the gas valve itself.

Sometimes those coils will open circuit when they warm up, and close when they cool down, giving you an erratic operation symptom.

After a few heating cycles the burner does not ignite

The problem you are describing is usually associated with a bad gas valve coil. The dryer runs normally until it gets hot, then starts making a strange clicking noise. After it cools down, the dryer runs normally again. The gas valve coils (there are two of them) usually run about $20 a piece. I recommend replacing both of them at the same time just to be sure. I hope this helps.
