The USM trick allows you totreat your H10 as an external hard drive. Then it is easy to copy the musicback to your PC using explorer.

The details for the USMtrick are taken from mistic river.

Most people agree that theUMS trick is a great thing to know how to do. With it, you can transfer music,OR treat your H10 as a harddrive to put anything you want on. The UMS trickwill also allow you to use your H10 with virtually any OS.

5/6 GB MTP Models

1. Make sure your H10 is turned off anddisconnected from the computer.
2. Take out the battery, wait a second, andput the battery back in.
3. Turn on the hold switch (so that youdon't accidentally turn the H10 on all the way).
4. Plug the H10 into your computer.
5. Turn on the H10 while holding the"O" button.
6. You will see the message "UMSMode" if you have done everything correctly. You can now let go of the"O" button.

20 GB MTP Models

4. Plug the H10 into your computer.
5.Turn on the H10 while holding the "O" button.
6. You will see the message "EmergencyConnection" if you have done everything correctly. You can now let go ofthe "O" button.

UMS Models

UMS models do not need thistrick because they are always in UMS mode!

Just to add to this. When you load files onto the iRiver in UMS mode, you won't be able to access them as you normally do. To find the files you loaded using drag and drop (not Media Player or Music Manager) you will need to go to the BROWSER on your player. This will allow you to access all the files on the player.

I am not a computer person. I am a very busy, super simple person that just wants to load music and go! I use a Mac OSx and recently bought an iRiver H10 5gb player at an auction. After days of research, I finally got the player to work with the Mac. Mind you, all the info I found was scattered all over the internet, in various downloaded files, masked with confusing directions, etc.

My steps are not hard, and I apologize if I am not using the proper lingo, not trying to offend, I just want to play music!

So, If you are having a problem using your iRiver h10 with your Mac, then these are the steps I took:

1. While the iRiver is off, plug in the usb cable to the unit and the Mac.
2. While holding the select button ("0" key) turn the iRiver on. You should see a black bar at the top of the window on the unit quickly followed by the words "USB Busy do not disconnect". Now you can release the buttons and your iRiver is in USM mode ..basically it is now an external drive. IF it doesn't go into the mode, turn it off remove the battery and try it again.
3. Drag any file into the Music folder.
4. Eject the player
5. Unplug the player from the Mac and scroll down to the browser.

The browser function will allow you to navigate all the files on your player. You will be able to view images, play music and display all the text files without switching modes. BUT..advanced features will NOT be available, such as genre searching, slide shows, etc... BUT you can play music! All I wanted to do anyway.. If you want all these features....I am still working on it.

EasyH10, iTuneMyWalkman, Windows media player and iRiver Music Manager are all loaded on my Mac. If I ever figure out how to get them to recognize the iRiver when it is in UMS mode, I will report back....otherwise, I will scramble my own music before loading it and just dance.

  1. Insert the installation CD into your PC to display the installation process screen.
  2. Select iriver plus 3 and click the Install button.
  3. Complete the installation process by following the on-screen instructions.
  4. Turn on the iRiver E100, and then plug it in to the computer using the USB cable.
  5. Open iRiver Plus 3.
  6. Select the desired files / folders in your PC and drag & drop Music, pictures, etc. to the drive which appears as the product.

Iriver won't let me upload from CDs and transfer....

Best way to use the H10 20gb is by creating a directory on your hard drive with your desired mp3 format files. Use ripping and encoding software with your existing audio cds.
Connect the h10 to the PC via the UMS trick (see this website).

Using a file directory on your pc, drag and drop the mp3 files from your pc to the MUSIC file folder on the h10. Install and run the EASY10 playlist creator software on your pc to organize the new files on your iRiver player. Disconnect the USB connection and enjoy!

H10 wants to lock up

sounds like a hard drive problem...
need to see if you can still access your hard drive through the UMS trick
For 20 GB MTP Models
  • Make sure your H10 is turned off and disconnected from the computer.
  • Poke the "reset" button with a paperclip.
  • Turn on the hold switch (so that you don't accidentally turn the H10 on all the way).
  • Plug the H10 into your computer.
  • Turn on the H10 while holding the "O" button.
  • You will see the message "Emergency Connection" if you have done everything correctly. You can now let go of the "O" button.
If yes, try formatting the H10 hard drive, reload the latest iriver h10 firmware, and transfer your music files directly to the h10 music folder with Windows file manager.
Download and run Easyh10 free playlist maker, to build and save a playlist to your player.

I found an updated firmware file (Don't know where I got it) and once it was installed I could see and transfer music files from Windows Media Player 11 to my iriver ifp 790. You can email me at saslats@roadrunner.com if you would like me to send you the file.

Want to copy .wma files back to pc

I have the greatest of news for all in this thread
If you download the latest firmware from this website
http://drivers.soft5000.com/dlf_4306.html
After you have done so your best move is to open your Iriver music manager and from there click on the button that says firmware upgrade after that it is as simple as clicking the firmware file that you have just downloaded.
Follow the onscreen instructions and you will be able to transfer to from your player no sweat.
Im glad to help

Pawn shop deal

the iriver series by default is not detected as a usb drive. iriver music manager is needed to transfer files. After a firmware upgrade, the device is usable as a usb hard drive. But you need the music manager software to upgrade

Hi Vera I am using windows2000 OS, can not yet justify a faster Pc to run XP .. following is what I use to load and manage my MP3 audio files on my H10 20GB >using an alternative to WMP 10, I use 'EasyH10' .. prepares an H10 player without iriver plus or Windows Media Player 10 based on music and playlist files transferred manually using windows Explorer easyh10-15.exe Info re Easy_H10 URL http://www.misticriver.net/wiki/index.php/Easy_H10 URL http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=138812&package_id=152796 download 'easyh10-1.5_win32gui.zip' - connect USB cable between Pc and H10 - place H10 in 'Lock' position - use a tool ( refashioned paper clip ) to press the reset button - start H10 in USB Mass Storage Device Mode... Hold down 'O' button, continue holding 'O' button while you press the 'On / Off ' button until screen displays USB connection, after emergency display - In Windows Explorer locate the ' removable drive' - Transfer your music files with tag information to 'Music' directory on H10 - Run EasyH10 - for Media database construction to display songs in MUSIC mode. - Playlist conversion, a necessary process for your playlist files to become compatible (recognizable) with an H10 player. - EasyH10 also imports/exports tuner presets from/to a text file.
