try the drive with another usb cable. (checking cable integrity)
try the drive on another computer. (is the drive faulty)
if issue not found try clearing the hard drive buffer, (power down computer, unplug hdd usb cable and power down the hdd. wait 10 seconds, power up the computer, when fully booted power up hdd, wait a further 10 seconds and connect usb cable. look for hdd in disk management
I have a 500GB and a 1TB. Both drives if they work at all, is because you have to apply the power after usb is connected. The 500MB still good but the 1TB took a big dump.
disconnect the
usb cable from the drive and hold in the reset button on thr drive wth a oaoer clip for 4 seconds while the drive is running, rebout your system whith the running and you should be able to format through manage drives
there have been alot of problems in the past with vista not all external components are compatible with this program.i had the same problem with vista so i got rid of vista and started using windows xp home edition since then i have never had a problem with it not recognising any device i have added to my computer.i hope this helps.
I had a very similar problem. It turned out to be a faulty case.
If the drive was formatted, there is a very good chance you've destroyed your data and may need professional services to recover the files (if possible)
Chances are you just needed to replace the external case by removing the harddrive from the simpletech case and installing it in a new case.
But again, if the drive's been formatted, it may have wiped out your data.
The simpletech 1tb drive's case has issues. I had the same problem. It actually quit while I was running a video off the drive. I replaced the case by removing the harddrive from the one it came in and installing it in another case and now it works again.
The first thing I would try is installing the drivers it came with, but failing that you will need to replace it's case.
It has 4 screws to remove, 2 under the silver warranty voiding tape and 2 visable on the bottom side. Remove them, then use a flat screwdrive to pop the case open (gently). Then remove the harddrive.
You will need a case with SATA data AND power cables for this to work.
