After changing the black ink cartridge, printer won't work - I have an 6A00 error - no lights are on where the 5 ink cartridges are - help!!

The printer requires both cartridges to have ink before the printer will initialize and operational. Even if you are only printing black and white both cartridge have to contain ink or the printer will error out. This is standard on all ink jet printers from every manufacturer. Remove the print head and soak it for three 5-minute cycles in hot (~170 F) distilled water about 3/4 inch deep with continuous mild agitation. The first soak quickly turn the water black, the second end with the water a dark grey color. The hot distilled water dissolved the dried ink in the small ink passages from the cartridges to the ink ejection part of the print head.
Carefully dry the print head as per instructions, clean the electrical contacts on the printer, and placed the print head and the ink cartridges in the printer.Turn off the printer, then unplugged it for one minute.Then turn it on...and print an alignment sheet...

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has.

Power on the printer. Open the printer and take out the Dell Series 5 Black cartridge. make sure all the tape is off the cartridge and put the cartridge back in. Now do the same for the Dell Series 5 color cartridge.

Close the printer. It should print an alignment page. Any error messages?

Take out both Dell Series 5 ink cartridges and make sure the tape is off the cartridges and insert both back in and make sure the seat properly and latch. Close the printer and it should print an alignment page. If you still get the error message, please read bleow.

Open the printer(with the power on) and take out the Dell Series 5 black cartridge and then reseat it. I would then take out the color Dell Series 5 ink cartridge and reseat it. Now close the printer and it will print an alignment page.

Check the printer's power/alarm light. If it is flashing orange, count the number of flashes. Look up the flash code in your printer's user manual to diagnose the problem.

2 Remove and reinstall the ink cartridges if the power/alarm light flashes 5, 7 or 15 times consecutively. This indicates that the issue is a cartridge error, an incorrectly installed cartridge, or an unrecognized cartridge. These errors can be fixed by reinstalling the ink cartridges. Make sure that you are using the correct ink cartridges for your Canon printer.

Turn on the printer and open the front cover. The ink cartridge holder should move to the replacement position.

4 Verify that the colored ink cartridge is inserted in the slot on the right and the black ink cartridge is inserted in the slot on the left. Swap the cartridges and reinstall them in the correct slots if necessary.

5 Check to see that both ink cartridges are level with one other and parallel to the top of the ink cartridge holder. If either cartridge is wedged at an angle, gently apply pressure to the cartridge until it clicks into the correct position.
