    I have
opened the top cover of dryer and checked the parts number. I saw there are 2

    I could

    corner edge on boards.

    Could you
tell me which one is the control board that I need to get part number?

    Thank you

The "control lock" light is turned on and i can not use the dryer. Can you please assist me how to unlock the dryer?

  • aprvd123 May 14, 2009

My problem started with the dryer locking out. Holding the end of cycle button worked at first but then didn't. Unplugging it overnight worked for a while too. Now I have 3 dim lights (Damp, Bulk items and Extra low). that stay on all the time. No other buttons respond. After unplugging off and on for over a week it worked for one cycle. Whirlpool sent a new board but it didn't work. Not sure if buying a new control board is the answer. Any ideas?

Hello,
I had the same problem, but my husband, who is an engineer, figured out that if you pull out the light bulbs that are not reading the correct volts on his volt meter, the control lock light will shut off and the dryer will start working. If you do not know how to do this, you can always buy a new control panel. I know this sounds to simple to be true, but we have bought several new "brains" (control boards), tried unpluging the dryer for days at a time, had an certified whirpool technician come out (who recommended buying a new control board), and nothing worked.

I have had the same problem with my dryer twice, and this is how it can be fixed. I have been an electronics technician for over 20 years. When this happens you will see one or some of the led lights dimly on, for a time the problem could be intermitent. If you pull out the front control panel and use your multimeter on the diode function you can test the individual led lights while in circuit. If you find one that doesn't light or reads strange you can cut it off the board or use a solder iron to heat at 700 Deg F the led leads. What I have found both times that this burns off whatever impurities that have developed in the PN junction and causing a partial short and restores the function of the led. When you get everything back together Your dryer should work again.

As mentioned above in one of the comments, pulling out the light bulbs that are not reading the correct volts solved the issue. Basically one of the bulbs on the PCB gone bad and caused the control unit to go into "Control Locked" mode.

Try pressing and holding the "End of Cycle Signal" button for three seconds. The control lock should clear. This button is used to lock the controls so they cannot be manipulated. This is a safety feature designed by the manufacturer that prevents small children from being able to turn the washer on. If this does not work, the problem is more than likely a operator interface (control panel) malfunction. I hope this helps you. Let me know if you require additional assistance.

Unplug your dryer for at least 30 minutes as recommended by the manufacturer. This will reset the computer. If this fails, you more than likely have a failed control panel, and it will require replacement. Hopefully, you just experienced a glitch in the system and will not require any replacement parts. Let me know what you find.

More than likely you have a operator interface (control panel problem). I was hoping it wouldn't come to that even though it is a fairly simple repair job. The price, however, isn't cheap. A new user interface board will run you about $150 or more. Searspartsdirect.com carries the part. Just type in your model number and locate item number 19 under the "Top and Console Parts" heading. It is sold by color, that is why there are several listed. That's a lot for what may just be a stuck button on the board. But...these boards are not serviceable and require replacement when they go bad. I would attempt to remove the board, first and inspect it thoroughly before you purchase something you may not need. All you have to do is remove the top panel of the dryer first by removing the mounting screws that hold the panel in place in the rear of the dryer. With the top removed, there are a couple of mounting screws along the top bracket of the panel. Remove these screws and disconnect the wiring harness. The entire assembly should just lift straight up. Remove the control knob and the rest of the board is mounted from the inside of the exterior panel. Use care not to lose any of the small pieces/parts while disassembling. The two small push buttons (PAUSE/CANCEL & START) will fall out if you're not careful. Searspartsdirect.com has helpful illustrations to assist you with this. You still may get out of this by cleaning any exposed contacts on the board with a rubber eraser and some alcohol. Also look for any loose wires or connections. If not, I'm afraid you will have to replace it to correct the problem. I hope you find some of this helpful to you.

In my case, the problem was a dead main board. The board cost $190 and the overall repair cost $335. I will never buy another Whirlpool due to this experience.
