After a while, it will starts up but a lot of smoke come out of the exchaust. Not sure why or what needs to be done to fix this.

Recently, while cutting the lawn, I noticed the mower was running very erratically. I stopped to empty the grass catcher and after that the mower would not start again. What gives?

i chaned the gas, cleaned the filter, hit the primer button too many times, i suppose, then i saw gas leaking out of the filter .
    the engine still didn't start.
there was a faint sound but it won't turn over.

You may need to change the oil and/or empty the old gas and replace it with new.

This thing happens when you don't take care of your lawn mower for too long.

SOURCE: My lawn mower doesn't start

Hi Every 2 stoke engine needs three things to run:Fuel+oil/air mixture in correct proportions, compression and ignition.Remove the sparkplug and see if the spark appears when the piston in the cilinder is at top death point(almoust),if not check the flyweel key(not to be sheared).Check engine"s sealing(crankcase gasket, cilinder gasket,seals-crankshaft,carb gasket). Also the mufller(not to be clogged),disassembly the carb (check and clean it),fuel lines and fuel filter (check and clean them),gas cap tank vent(not to be clogged),the air filter. Please let me know. best regards savumihai71

SOURCE: Mower smoking and sputtering.

Sounds like the engine is getting flooded because the carburetor float needle is not seating. Let me know if this helps.donnyb60

You may want to check the gas cap to see if it clogged with dirt. If the gas cap is clear, you more than likely have a carburetor problem. If you need tips on carb. cleaning, feel free to ask.

when tipping mower to get to blades ALWAYS tip carb side UP. Otherwise oil gets dumped in carb and causes smoke and problems. let set for a day or 2 or start and let oil burn away

Hi michael, You have most certainly put in too much oil. Try draining a bit off and then clean the spark plug with some paper towel. Leave the mower level for a few hours and then try it again.

You did no harm. Try pulling a few more times and if that doesn't work, prime it 3 more times and if that still doesn't work, prime it 3 MORE times. It should start.

most likely you have oil on top of the pistons and to much has gotten into the intake and exhaust valves. remove the spark plug, clean it or replace it, than pull the starter rope several times to exhaust some of the oil inside. install plug and start the mower. it might smoke some but should clear up.

Cannot pull rope out to start mower

Bad news , Mower has sit up too long and the piston / crankshaft has become rusty and froze in place. (fix) buy some liquid wrench it comes in a can at your local hardware store...Tilt the mower onto its front wheels and remove the spark plug. Fill the Cylindar with the oil and leave it for a couple days. after a few days lean the mower back and attempt to pour out the left over oil. Then (Check Your Oil level) preferable replace old oil and pull choke..and start mower...if the engine is still frozen (Buy a New mower) 125bucks Sears.
