Tomtom rider 1 not charging when on bike

Hi I have a rider 1 and when its fitted onto the bike the connection is so poor that it often stops charging.
Is Tomtom awaire of this fault and have they produced a better bracket?
Is there anything that I can do to make the original bracket better?

Regards

I have a similar problem. When I attach the TT to the cradle it switches itself on which I assume it is meant to do, meaning it is connected. However, 3 or 4 hours of riding later I get a battery flat warning. Therefore it isn't charging. Cable looks OK and connections also OK. I'd be interested if anyone has a solution.

i called tomtom, they repaired my tomtom and sent me a new bracket, 2 weeks later, same prioblem and now i am not warrantied any more. I'm so glad these cost 4 times as much as regular tomtoms now, wonderful.

Connect it to the cradle and it switches on, but seems like the power is intermitent and after a few hours it is discharged. I keep charching it overnight at home, so i can get some use out of it.

    Any help will be appreciated.

I have the same problem and it has been this way for 12 of the 18 months I've owned it. I tried filling in the mounting slots with epoxy so that it would get a better connection when mounted but it made no difference. They apparently want nothing to do with the problem. Ever notice how there is no warranty section in the manual? I can't even get them to reply to my questions.

TOMTOM are VERY aware of this problem. but deny it is an issue!
I had the same problem, they sent me a new shoe after weeks of emails. I told them that the shoe is not the problem, it's the connector on the back of the TT1. Because of the springloaded pins fitted to the shoe and the poor quality connectors on the TT the normal vibration on a motorcycle causes the pins to wear holes in the connectors on the TT causing intermittant connection.
As the cost of repairing or replacing these connectors is very high and there are a large number of units that would require this repair TT are ignoring it.
I'm now looking at a way of bypassing the connector altogether.
A temporary solution appears to be to smear the contacts on the back of the rider with a little petroleum grease or WD40 - seems to work for a couple of weeks at a time.

    Update:

I've now taken my tomtom rider apart, desoldered the wires on the back of the connector, removed the connector and reinstalled it after rotating it through 180 Deg. This means that the pins on the cradle now press against an unused part of the connector pad. Should be okay for another 18months use.

I know several people with Tom Tom Riders and they all have the same issue. Tom Tom are denying that this is a general issue, but they clearly know that it is universal.

Power board is faulty, repair or replace. Workshop repair required. Oh, stop plugging a charger into the USB socket. It doesn'tlike it, thats for data transfer only. The round pin socket is the charger port

I turn on my tom tom go 700 and the screen appears with a picture of the tom tom in a green box and then it stops and i wont turn of

If your TomTom GO/ONE/RIDER is frozen, won’t turn on or does not behave as it should, it can be fixed by resetting or restarting your TomTom device.
A reset will not delete any data from your device, with the exception of SMS messages on TomTom GO500/700.
  1. Connect your GO/ONE/RIDER to the power charger. If you have a power charger, use it to power your TomTom GO/ONE/RIDER. If you do not have a power charger, make sure that the battery in your TomTom GO/ONE is fully charged.
Note: You need to charge your GO/ONE for at least 2 hours using the 12-24V cigarette lighter adapter.
  2. Reset your GO/ONE/RIDER. To reset the unit, you simply have to push a straightened paper clip (or something similar) into the RESET hole on the device.
    • On TomTom GO 910/710/510, the RESET hole is located on the bottom of the device.

    • On TomTom GO 700/500/300, the RESET hole is located on the bottom of the device with the word RESET right next to it.

    • On TomTom ONE, the RESET hole is located on the bottom of the device, with the word RESET right next to it (just below the SD card slot).
      tomtomone.jpg
    • On TomTom RIDER, the RESET hole is on the bottom of the device, behind the SD card door. When opening the SD card door you will see the RESET hole on the left, right underneath the SD card slot.

  3. Your TomTom GO/ONE/RIDER is now reset. Finally, press and hold the power button for 2 seconds.

What new parts were fitted? Were there the same issues before the parts were fitted? There may be a compression isssue due to a poorly fitted part. This will become evident as the bike becomes warm and parts start to expand with heat.

My Rider 1 is showing the same sympton. Was working fine now I can't get past the initial "Tomtom" screen.

Does it power up when connected to the mains charger?- No, need to prod reset and then turn on manually.
Does it switch on when connected to the bike cradle? - No, only sign of life if by manually turning on but only get as far as the Tomtom screen, not the main menu.

Any ideas welcome

Tomtom rider will only switch on whilst under mains power and on

If it will switch on when connected to mains or car charger then perhaps your battery has had it. My battery no longer retains charge even when not in use. Suggest try new battery.

I recently had a bit of success with TomTom. My TomTom Rider 1 did not charge on the bike cradle, there is a known problem with the early cradles. TomTom have developed a TomTom Rider 1 replacement cradle (updated) and if you push hard they will wend you one in the post free of charge.
