Previous problem with Zone Alarm

Until a few weeks ago I had Zone Alarm installed, then because I was suddenly unable to access the Internet, due I was told, to Microsoft doing something that they shouldn't have done, I had to uninstall it and instal a different firewall. I preferred Zone Alarm and I wish to re-install,it but only if the previous problem has been dealt with and is unlikely to re-occur.

Please can you advise me

It Is curous that you claim that my ZA was not set up properly, it certainly was - by a professional and had been peforming perfectly for 3 years until Microsoft did something daft, my concern is to ensure that it will not happen again! Can you reassre me?

  • donfox35 Sep 01, 2008

Solution #2 thewomble was the answer that I needed - (thank you) - not ginko jumping to wrong conclusions.

For the record (and I emphasise this) my ZA was set up correctly - by a pro' - and as I know that it is not a Microsoft product I did not seek their advice and I switched to another firewall once I had taken advice from colleagues who had sffered the same problem and worked out what was happening. Hopefully this is something that Microsoft will anticipate in future.

I shall however make further enquiries here in the UK tho' before I decide whether or not to re-install ZA.

Thanks ginko for the helpful info' I shall be discussing this with colleages and see where we go from there.

The tragedy is that Microsoft can afford to be so arrogant, it is not exactly constructive for such a major industry - I can only assume that it will become worse as they go on - which they will do at their peril, they have only to look at the history of the arrogance of certain aspects British Industry and its sad consequences for us all. When they come unstuck, as thet undoubtedly will, it will be a catastrophe for them - and us!

However, as pointed out I did not contact Microsoft at all w.r.t this, I eventually got in touch with Fixya (because a colleage who had initially contacted ZA was away on business), and it was the womble that told me what I needed to know in the first instance - that ZA had issued an update to fix the problem. As this is the case we shall see what happens next- could be good.

    Thanks again,

When microsoft did their latest update (#3) ZA didn't work correctly. ZA bought out an up-date that fixed the problem.

The problem occurred because ZAwas not setup properly.
Once you do not chose to block any software that is needed for your network or for your system, the firewall won't give you any trouble.
Just ensure that you authorize all vital software full access through the firewall.

You can download Zone Alarm by clicking here then chosing 'download now'

Do not forget to vote the solution.

Many thanks,

The reason why they asked you to remove ZA and work on a different Firewall is because it is not a Microsoft product and they are not trained to solve problems or setup Zone Alarm.

For the rest, majority of firewalls do the same things.

Do not forget to vote the solution.

    Many thanks

    Reassure what?
A firewall it is not something that you fix or setup once for all.
A firewall must be adapted continuously when you change network settings or install new software.
And sure, setting up a firewall on a personal computer is a user level operation, you need to learn how to set it up by yourself.
I cannot see how you can keep doubting about what is told you on this simple matter.
Why do you ask me , or Microsoft guys, if you think you know the problem already .
The solution is all above, read also Zone Alarm help to understand what a firewall is and how it works.

I mean a firewall keep changing its settings each time you install a new software, and ask you what to do, all you have to do is grant access to programs and devices that must be trusted, like your router or modem internet connection.

For the rest ZA does the same thing as the built in Windows firewall, only it has a more colored and user friendly interface.

Regarding it happening again, yes , it can happen at any time , if by mistake you do not grant firewall access to the component and processes necessary for your local network.

Now that you know how to fix the problem this should not be such a big worries.

Whenever there are network troubles, first thing to do is stopping the firewall.

Listen mate I spent 20 years working on local networks, all I can tell you is that if the update suggested has stand alone setup it will work the same as ZA installation.
I am here to help you , not to put in discussion my knowledge or Microsoft technician competence, I am sure the guys over there know better than you, and probably someone knows better then me.
If you need help, the worst you can do is refusing experts tip at start, you get nowhere.

Regarding the problems with Microsoft operative system and its updates I wan to tell you one list thing that can be in some way enlightening.
Everybody (me included) is annoyed with microsoft problems with other software.
The fact is that Microsoft bulds and sells the most popular Operative System (OS).
The OS (windows), is the basic environment on wich all software run and is installed.
Microsoft never adapt the operative system to any other software, they do not give a toss about ZA, Adobe, Firefox, or any foreign make software. It is the software that must adapt to Windows, with a continuous work from softwarehous programmers, Microsoft just keep going on is way.
It is Microsoft that built the little universe in which you (or Zonealarm) moves when you use your computer.
If you noticed a problem between Windows update and ZA you must write to ZA programmers, not to uncle bill. I am sure they will appreciate.

PS: unless your computer froze or returned an error message, your problem was still a matter of settings, due to MS Update or not. this is true, believe me or not.

Torjan virus detected and due to virus unable to open files

That`s a critical infection and I`m affraid that you can't recover these files else from the original source. Usually infected files are taken by the antivirus software and moved to a secure zone and locked so you can't access them without antivirus approval.

All of a sudden I am unable to open certain sites.

Some hotels install a webfilter, to stop people looking at dodgy sites or using all there bandwidth on downloading music or movies.

If this is not looked after by a good admin then you will find that it will block site which should not be. best to call there support and see if they can sort it.

Can't connect to internet when K9 program installed

Symptom You are unable to access any website
  • Your firewall is blocking K9
  • You are connected behind a proxy server
Solution If you receive an error that states "K9 Web Protection Not Responding," please click here. Otherwise, continue below.
You may be unable to access the Internet using K9 in a couple cases:
Case 1: Your firewall is blocking K9
If you are using a desktop firewall, it may appear that you cannot access the Internet. To resolve this issue, you will need to configure your firewall to "always allow" the following program to access the internet:
C:\Program Files\Blue Coat K9 Web Protection\k9filter.exe
Please consult your desktop firewall documentation for instructions on how to do this. Note that the location of this file will be different if you chose to install K9 in a different location.
Case 2: You are connected behind a proxy server
If you are REQUIRED to use a proxy server to access the Internet, you will be unable to use K9 Web Protection at this time. Examples of environments where proxy servers are common include schools, businesses, libraries, and hotels -- potentially any environment where one internet connection is shared over a large network. We hope to offer proxy compatibility in a future version of K9.

You may have to copy and paste the link into your browser.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

it is possible for the person to remotely access your machine if you do not have a firewall installed. I reccomend zone alarm free edition as a good free firewall. Websites in your favorites that were not there before could signify a virus on your computer. I would download the free copy of avg anti virus to scan your machine and check.
Hope this helps.
