Maytag Atlantis MAV6548A Transmission R&R

I have my transmission replaced 5 months ago. Now the repair man said that it needs to be replaced again, but I don't want to pay another service fee. Maytag sent me the parts. How do I get instructions on replacing it myself and is it worth it?

Should water back up into the tub upon spin completion on maytag atlantis

No, If water is coming back, the sewer is cloged up or is a big posibility that the washers transmission is not spenning at all. it may sound like is agitating during the wash and spinning during the rinse. To check it, put soap inside the drum if it doesn't get disolved after the cycle is done. The transmission needs to be replace. Is costly you may want to shop for a new one.

Greese slinging in a big circle under machine on a maytag atlantis

I once had grease leaking under my new Maytag washer, and it turned out to be a leaky transmission. This was on a new machine too, so don't think it can't happen.
Call the lonely repair man who never works !!
Lots of luck to you. Hope you get your machine working clean again real soon.

I have a Maytag Atlantis top load machine. It is 7 years old. I have very dark oil dripping from under the machine at the bottom edge of the front. I am assuming the gear box is gone but wanted to confirm...

Sorry to confirm your suspisions but its leaking oil from the transmission and its exxxpensive to replace the transmission. And sad but true the good ole days of dependabilty of the maytag is gone espically since 5 years ago Maytag was bought by Whirlpool. a Whirlpool is a good machine but nothing was good as the old Maytag's

Wont spin

Sounds like the transmission seal had failed sometime back and has leaked the lubricant causing the transmission to overheat and now possibly seizing the gears, if this is the case the transmission will have to be replaced. Depending on the age of the washer, (5 years or less) you should contact Maytag to see if they will compensate you by way of furnishing the new transmission for free, but you will be responseable for the labor charge from a tech to do the replacement.
If they will not cover the part, you will probably be better off to replace the washer than to invest in the cost of a new trans and labor.
Good Luck !

I had the same problem with mine a couple of years ago and it ended up being the transmission was shot. Apparently this is a common problem with this washer. Google it and see.

How to replace gears myself?

Just went through an agitator problem with my MAV7700AWW Atlantis. You are talking about the main (bottom) agitator, not the corkscrew part up top, right? If so, you can check this site to see how to access parts inside your washer. I found it very helpful: http://www.geocities.com/maytagrepairwasher/
I too, had visions of replacing stripped gears, but after searching the internet for a few days, decided to buy a new transmission, replace it, and then tear in to my old one and repair it and then have the original for a spare.
I found a NEW transmission and tub seal kit for under $120 including shipping to my door.
If you have an Atlantis, then the following information will be very helpful. Otherwise, you may find that you have a transmission that can be serviced more easily.
When I finally got the old transmission out I was very happy with my decision. I cannot see how it comes apart - no screws, bolts, clips, or clamps. It is an upper and lower half that appears to be gooped together by a blue sealant. The new transmission appears to have the halves crimped together - maybe it is a serviceable part, but it is not very user friendly.
If you decide to tackle the job, I can offer a few tips on alternative tools and also on disassembly of the brake.
