No. You can only use the camera in manual mode, setting the shutter speed to, say, 1/125 sec and the aperture: according to the working aperture on the flash. The flash has to be in auto mode. The physical connection between the camera and flash can be either a standard PC cord, originally supplied with the flash plus a hotshoe-to-PC-female "cube", or an SCA305a cable plus an SCA301 standard foot. Of Metz 45 series only the 45CL4 Digital together with an SCA3102 M4 module is dedicated to the Canon EOS digital series.

No. The flash's trigger voltage is much too high. You could use something like this to isolate the units, however you won't get any of the automatic functions.

I have sunpak pf30x fash unit for canon camera.but i need to use it for nikon D90.how can i do it? is ther any converter units or hot shoe unit

No. The PF30X is a dedicated unit, specifically for the particular brand of camera. A Canon unit, such as the one you have, will not work in auto mode on a Nikon camera.

Doesn't work with canon d40 digital camera

You may have identified your own problem.

Your camera is either a Nikon d40 or a Canon EOS 40d (aka Digital Rebel), there's no such thing as a Canon d40.

If your Quantaray flash has the wrong brand dedication module on the bottom for your brand then it won't work properly (if at all).

If this is not the cause, then please be more descriptive: does the flash power up at all, will it work with other cameras, do other external flashes work on your camera? You may just need to go into the menu and enable the hotshoe.

Click here as well if you lack an operation manual: Quantaray products are always a pain to find manuals for as they're badge-engineered models supplied in the USA by Ritz/Wolf. The trick is always to find what the individual product is usually sold as. In your case, it's a ProMaster FTD5700. Page 2 of the manual will help you to identify which dedicated module you need for this flash to work with your camera.

I hope that I've helped, if not then please report back with additional details, or if I've helped you to solve your problem then please take a moment to rate my answer.

Hi. Will a Vivitar 550FD flash unit work properly with a Nikon D5000 digital camera without doing damage to the camera? Thanks,Arty

The 550 FD came out before digitals. It is fully dedicated(FD) to a type of film camera. Usually this is noted on the back of the flash. CA or C for Canon, MI or MX for Minolta, Ne or NI for Nikon. If its the Nikon dedicated unit, it should not harm your camera, and will most likely work...as a manual flash. You will lose all the neat flash stuff that the D5000 can do.
I suggest you watch Ebay for a Sunpak PZ-30, PZ-40, or a Sigma 430 or 500. The Sigma EF 500 Super will do pretty much everything the top of the line Nikon Flash does, but you can buy it new for half the price of the Nikon unit. All flashes today are dedicated to a certain group of cameras by a certain manufacturer. For example: Canon EOS film cameras or Minolta manual focus cameras.
I suggest you get rid of the 550FD as it is designed for the pre-Autofocus cameras.
Avoid the Sunpak Auto 30DX, the 333, 383, 433, 444 and the PZ 4000/5000 as well as the MZ flashes. These were not designed for your new digital.
Metz also makes some very nice flashes, but they're kinda pricey.

Quantaray QTB-9500A with Canon Xsi not working properly

This is probably way too late for the original asker, but the previous answer is incorrect.

The Quantaray QTB-9500A is in reality a ProMaster FTD-5700 and was designed for use with later model electronic 35mm AF models (using the correct dedication module).

As such, the trigger voltage is no higher than 5v making it safe for use on later digital SLR's.

The original answerer is clearly aware that high trigger voltages on flashes designed for earlier, mostly mechanical, 35mm film cameras are often harmful to later models, but you need not worry about your model.

I have a sunpak 622

Sunpak does not offer dedicated (TTL) module to any digital cameras. The flash can only be used in auto mode, while the camera is set to full manual. The lens has to be stopped down according the working aperture on the flash, correct exposure will be maintained by the built-in sensor of the flash. Fire the flash using a simple hotshoe-to-PC cube if your camera doesn't sport a PC connector. Trigger voltage of the 622 is safe.
