Question about Dell Dimension 2300 PC Desktop

Adding second hard internal hard drive

The original IDE cable only supports one hard drive for this computer. Will a new cable that has a second connector for a slave drive work in this computer. Can you tell me if the BIOS will accept the second drive. I would like to install a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 160Gb ata/ide drive.

Sure it will, put the jumper setting on the hdd to cable select mode.

What type or brand of hard drive do I have to get to install in Acer AM5641 Desktop ? I want to upgrade to a 1 tb hd.


You currently have a 320GB 7200-rpm SATA II hard drive, with 8MB cache install on a base package of your make and model of computer. I would recommend a hard drive like Samsung Spinpoint F4EG 2 TB Internal hard drive. You can find it roughly for $70.00 - $90.00 at online stores like amazon, new egg, etc.

How to replace a hard disk drive.


Step 1: Back up and scout around
First, back up your critical files (don't forget your Outlook .PST archive) to optical discs, an external drive, or online storage. Then check whether a CD comes with the drive, providing drive-specific information and general upgrade assistance. It may also later help you copy the contents of one drive to another. Install this software first. Then, power down your PC, unplug all cables, and open the case. Next, ground yourself by touching a metal portion of the chassis.
Look inside—your first task is to determine where your new drive will go. Bays for internal drives are usually located below the wider, front-accessible bays that house CD or DVD drives. If you plan to replace your boot drive with the new drive and don't have an empty bay, your upgrade will involve more steps than we can cover here. But if you're replacing your boot drive and you have an empty bay, follow our steps for adding a second drive. After formatting it, use Norton Ghost (or a similar program) to clone your boot drive's contents to the new drive. Then, revisit steps 3 and 4 to direct your PC to boot from the new drive.
We'll be installing a SATA drive, but the process is similar for the other common drive type, IDE. SATA drives use a thin, seven-pin data cable; IDE drives use a 40-pin ribbon cable that's usually gray. If you're unsure which drive type your PC already has, check its documentation or label. Most PCs more than a year or two old employ IDE hard and optical drives, and don't support SATA unless they have a SATA PCI card installed. More-recent desktops may use (or just support) SATA drives but should support IDE, too.
Tip: If you transfer Windows XP from one drive to another, you may have to reauthorize Windows. Step 2: Examine data and power connections
Most hard drive kits include a data cable (SATA or IDE, depending on the drive), a power adapter cable (with some SATA drives), and screws. If yours doesn't include cables, you can purchase them separately.
First, the data connection. If you're installing a SATA drive as secondary storage, follow the data cable from your current drive (assuming it's SATA, too) to the other end. See if an unused SATA port lies nearby on the motherboard or an interface card. If you can't find one, consult your PC's documentation.

(The "master" drive goes at the end—see step 3.)
Next, consider the power connection. Our SATA drive has a 15-pin SATA power connector. If you already have a SATA drive installed, follow its power cable (the wider of the two connectors) to see if an unused power-supply lead with the same connector is nearby. If so, earmark that lead for your new drive. If it can't reach the empty bay, see if any bundled adapters help.
Some SATA drives also support familiar legacy Molex four-pin power connectors—you can use a Molex or SATA connector. If so, hunt for a free Molex-style lead. Still no match? Then you'll need an adapter, such as a Molex-to-SATA adapter (some kits bundle one), or a Y-adapter that splits a lead in two.
IDE drives are simpler: They always use Molex connectors. You just need a free Molex-style lead (or a Y-splitter). Step 3: Mount and connect the drive
When installing SATA drives, jumper settings usually aren't an issue. That's not true of IDE, where a jumper indicates whether a drive is a primary ("master") or secondary ("slave") drive. Check its documentation for the proper setting. If your PC has only one IDE hard drive, it's probably set to "master." Computer did not bootup after adding 2nd harddrive


Did you connect the drive to cable spot closest to the motherboard on the primary IDE channel? is it formatted? Did you try the drive on the Second IDE channel? Can your system support a 160 GIG drive?(if not try partitioning the drive.). Is the power and data cable connected properly?(the red line on the data cable should be closest to the power plug on the drive.)

I want to install a seond hard drive in computer


can you please open up the CPU and check one thing? Is there any Free port in this cable? One end will be connected to the motherboard and two others to (1)CD/DVD rom and (2) Hard drive.

If there is free, surely you can add one. Please then look for a place where you can place your (ATA not the sata one) harddrive.

Won't reconize DVD burner


Well, the CD ribon cable goes into the IDE 2 slot on the Mainboard and the furthest connector on the other end is the master, the second one closest to the board is the Slave connector. The CD drive has a jumper on the back between where the ribbon and the power connector go, on the case some where it should have a diagram showing the jumper setting to put it in as master or slave. Set it accordingly.

Same with Hard drives.

If the Hard drive has a diferent Cable like a SATA, then be sure to get a SATA as the new one.

Now the IDE cables may be bad check them for damage just to be on the safe side.

Trying to add another internal hard drive to Dell Dimension 3000


Ok... one end of the ide cable goes to the board... make sure that's plugged in correctly and has a blue connector.... second... the last drive on the other end has to be the master... the drive before that is the slave... if that setup is not working ensure that the drivers are set for master and slave... also make the power is pluigged into both drives

Is the new hard drive replacing the first, or is this a second drive?
Is there a specific error message the computer is reporting when it fails?
If you go into the BIOS, does it show that it recognizes the second drive?

The first thing I would check would be the jumpers. On the back of the drive, between the power connector and the IDE cable, are the jumpers. Usually on the top of the drive is a diagram showing the proper positions for various settings.

There are three choices that are significant: Master (or Primary), Slave (or Secondary) and CS (Cable Select). Usually CS is the appropriate setting. If you kept the original drive plugged into the same position on the cable, and both drives are on CS, then you should be ok. However, it may be better to force the issue. Set the original (boot) drive to PRIMARY and the new drive to SECONDARY and try again.

Hard drive installation


You should be able to install that drive. The biggest variable is if it is a SATA or PATA drive. This model was built for SATA drives, but I think you may be able to get a PATA drive to work with the right adapters.
