Not enough information for a good reply. Are you sure your tv is set to the correct mode or channel for vcr? Make sure both devices are on, your dvd/vcr playing if you can, and see if the tv on channel 3, channel 4 or channel 91 show that dvd/tape. Otherwise, try checking your remote control, MENU button and look for device options, or INPUT options, on the main menu.
On old style CRT TV's there used to be a Degaus button that nuetralized any static build up inside the tube, and corrected those "Halo" or Color ghosts on the screen. You can take a very strong magnet and pass it a few inches in front of the screen. Try sweeping the magnet across from left to right until you have accurate colors again. (Takes less than 1 minute)
I have a CR202 EM8 and I have had to do this a couple times over the years. On my cable system I can tune in a Color Bars pattern on channel 2, which makes it really obvious where the static build up it affecting your colors.
Call 1 800 Remotes or go to www.remotes.com. In the middle of the page type in the model number which in your case would be VT1920. I believe the original remote is not available anymore but you can get a substitute remote for that TV. Also have you considered getting a universal remote? Those work on any TV with any component. Try the first two suggestions and hopefully you will find what you are looking for...
When you say small horizontal screen, ¿Do you mean picture does not fill the screen completely from top to button? ¿Do images display normally though they are smaller in size? ¿Is color and definition of signal OK? Please answer so I can have a better picture of the problem.
