I have suggested to a few people with Seagate drive issues that it could be a short with a diode between 12V and Gnd.

Put a meter across the power input of your drive enclosure. If it's reading about 1 Ohm, then you have a short and it would be worth opening the case and looking for a small black diiode marked BUX C??? (??? are numbers but vary). This is a known weakness in Seagate (especially Baraccuda) drives and killed one of mine without warning. Unfortunately, I don't know which drive is inside your case.

If it is the diode, then you will tell because a meter across it should read something like 10MegOhms. If it reads more like 1 Ohm then it's shorted. Cliping out the diode and reassembling should then let the drive run long enough to back up your data, or replace the diode (an SMD 1N4004 has been used for this) for a better fix.

If it's not the diode, I can't help.

Seagate 500GB FREEAGENT DESKTOP 7200RPM EXTERNAL USB 20 HARD DRIVE 16MB it just stoped working in the middle of the movie, complete blackout, tryed conect to another PC nothing came up, what it could be...

Try this:

1. Turn off the power supply to the hard drive.
2. Turn off your PC/laptop.
3. Connect the hard drive to the PC/laptop.
4. Turn on both devices.

It worked with mine.

You could also try installing Seagate Manager which can check for errors on the drive.

My Seagate FreeAgent Pro HD won't turn on anymore. Any suggestions?

If it's not turning on at all anymore and it's plugged in properly, there isn't much you can do. Everything I've purchased from SeaGate wasn't meant to last. In other words, after a year or so, they quit working. It's probably some kind of marketing scheme to get you to spend more money. Open up the case, take out the drive and stick it in your computer. That way you can still salvage what's left on it.

Try Testdisk. see if it picks up the drive and if so get it to check the boot sector and rebuild it if necessary.

Seagate Free Agent Problem

i have the exact same problem... not sure what caused it... there was a massive power spike here, and that could be it... of cource most of the electronics fried by that do not even turn on, while that turns on just fine and flashed the yellow light...

the drive sounds fine itself, so the problem is most likely in the Seagate FAP case itself, probably the internal circuitry, as when i turn it on the drive spins up normally and does not make and noises that are the tell-tale signs of a dead drive... my suggesgion would be to crack open the Seagate case (i know i know, i thought it looked nice to, but would you rather have all your data or a nice-looking doorstop) and take the hard drive out, then connect it either 1) directly into your computer or 2) into another external hardrive case. As this hard drive has eSATA, it is probibly a safe bet that it is a SATA drive, so that's probibly the connection you need. Again, i have not tried this, but i will attempt it soon... what's the worst that can happen? my drive will not work inside the case, my drive will not work outside the case... same thing really... but this is the last time i buy seagate...

Need specs on AC adapter

It'll need a +5v and a +12v.
I'll repost tomorrow with current ratings, I've got one at work.

Or you could take the drive out of the Seagate case and put it in another case, they are cheap.
