Question about Televison & Video

5 Answers

My 1 and 1/2 year old Scott 37 inch LCD HD TV stopped working today. While watching the tv a loud snap like a firecracker occured and a green lightning like flash went up to the ceiling behind the set. The tv is totally dead now.Let it sit and cool off. Also put the plug in another socket. No extented warranty on this set. The question is the TV worth fixing when I can buy a Toshiba 42 inch for 900. Also if not worth fixing in your opinion or you think it is not worth the 70 dollars for analysis, what would you buy in the 37 t0 42 inch range. Aoso, would you buy an extended warrantyon . Thana new set. Thanks Tom Filloramo

You say buy a new LCD TV. Is it unusual for a LCD to self destruct in less than two years. How long does a good one last. would you buy an LCD, Plasma, or the old fashion tube. What would you buy for a brand name. I am so upset that a 1000 dollar tv craps out in such a short time. Please advise

Go for the sony lcd televisions as they give the extended warranty .after the warranty is over you can claim for extended warranty .you have to pay some thing extra for this but that is worth if this type of accindental problem happens. but as a expert i will suggest you to please get your tv to the very local repair center in your area .they just need customers for their levilhood.they also bargain for the cost.and also u will get the warranty for the parts he replaced.as ypou just have to pay after the tv is repaired, then why not try before buying a new. if the parts are replaced why the problem will occur again and if occured there is a warranty for the parts.

pls do rate the solution

thanks.
regards.

This you could due the short of the current in the board or due high voltage in the voltage in the tv which is caused you this problem use a ,repair this will cost you 250 to 500 for the parts and labor cost will be around 200 $ ,instead you can buy new TV and then use the Surge proctor which will protect the TV any high voltage to prevent damage its within 50$ ,Please use this link to check the price:

IF like DIY then I would recommend going to the following link and getting the service manual so you can see first hand disassemble instructions and testing procedures. Its only 10.99 and they email it to you shortly after purchase. The manual is a valuable resource as it will have part numbers in case you do need a new KD board. heres the link.

Good luck.....

The TV in my opinion would cost around 400 to 500$ to have it fixed since most likely a board inside is burnt based on the description that you gave. Well If you have it analyzed for $70 it could be considered cheap if in fact only some loose wires may have caused a short or the power supply shorted, so having it checked may save you money. As for the extended warranty Yes I would buy it depending on the cost. If it costs more than 30% of the purchase price then never mind. So basically my suggestion is to have it checked first for $70 then if it will cost you more than 400 to 500 to fix then just replace it and buy the new one with an extended warranty if it does not cost more than somewhere around 10 to 20 % of your purcahse price.

Honestly an LCD should not as you say **** out in such as short time. its built to last supposedly, mine has been in operation for about 3 years of daily heavy use. Im expecting it to go anytime. Honestly, I always go with Sony by choice and always LCD rather than plasma. It lasts longer.

For my opinion I will just go in buying a new Toshiba 42 with extended warranty so what ever happen on that new TV you're sure that you can have it repair or replace anytime during the warranty and the extended warranty, but if you want to ahve the old TV fix you will spent big bucks for the repair labor and the parts that needs to be replace..

Hope that helps........

I prefer getting a Plasma instead of a LCD tv, LCD TV should last 3 or more than years but not sure why yours just last for a year...

If the model is a rear projection, the loud noise could have been the power supply or the lamp. Power supply is around $200, bulb starts from $400, add $100 or so for labor.
It is still worth, but won't be far from a price for a new TV set of same or better quality.

If it is an LCD parts may be cheaper, unless LCD panel is gone, that is the only really expensive part.
Fee for repair starts from $80 for diagnose the problem, $150/200 for a fix with no parts involved.
And more likely $300/$400 in your case, as some component have probably shorted and blown.

Check that it is not just the power cable that has shorted, if it has external power adapter check that this is still working, a replacement power adapter goes for $60 or so.

Test also on a different power socket.

Light green and pink spots on my hd tv!!!

Hi--Bought my panasonic pt-52lcx65 on sale for $2200 in 8/05. Replaced the lamp for about $300 in 1/08, just prior to Superbowl. Admittedly, this was to be expected after family members watched lots of tv over 30 months. However, two months later the blue spot emerged in 3/08, and red spot emerged 5/08. Set looks decorated by a Andy Warhol or Van Gogh wannabe. I'm looking for a fix it solution. Dr. Bob Heiliger, Lebanon, OH.

This is a Polaroid brand.
The failure on these TV sets is originating from the power supply assembly not providing a clean DC voltage to the main board.
The power supply will need to be repair since there aren't service parts available.
I could fix the power supply for you.

Green spot / glow in center left side of Panasonic PT-61LCX65 LCD Projection HDTV

This unit has a chonic issue with corruption in the eeprom that causes spots and shadows. The correction is to find some service center that has the jig to hook up to your unit and correct the eeprom. This is an extended warranty issue with Panasonic and if you contact them they should be able to refer you a qualifed service center and Panasonic will pay.

Loud electrical sounds

It sounds like the Power transistor that drives the High Voltage Transformer shorted out. The rapid clicking sound you are hearing when pressing the power button now is that of the power supply starting to come up, detecting a short circuit and shutting back off again, preventing further damage. It is likely that the HV Transformer is shorted as well which usually causes the Output transistor to fail. Since the set is only 2 1/2 years old, it is probably worthwhile getting it to a repair shop as long as you have been very satisfied with the picture quality up to this point. If the picture size was larger than you needed, you might consider going down to a 37" LCD HDTV set. Toshiba is tops in this category IMHO.
