That depends on if you're willing to perform the steps required to replace the gearcase (transmission) , and the price to fix it. Review the following link, it explains the steps required to replace the gearcase and how to access it:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r699497-replacing_gearcase

This is a pretty straight forward repair job that you can accomplish on your own if you follow the steps required. A replacement can be found at either searspartsdirect.com or repairclinic.com. Just type in your complete model number (located along the wash tub opening under the lid) and follow the links on the next page. The Sears website offers helpful parts drawing to assist you in component identification and assembly. Do some cost comparisons at each site as they both offer competitive pricing. The average cost is about $150. A refurbished one will cost you less.

If you are going to go the route of replacing the gearcase, I would strongly recommend replacing the motor coupling as well. The coupler is located between the drive motor and gearcase and typically wears out. The cost is about $15 or less. The next link explains the steps required to replace a motor coupling, and includes the part number:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

I know some of these steps are repetitive, but it may include information the previous link does not cover. Typically, a broken motor coupling will cause a no agitate or spin problem too. Coupled with the fact that the washer is making a grinding noise and will not spin by hand leads me to believe that your initial diagnosis may be right on. A tale tell sign of some failed gearcases is a honey colored oil leaking from them. If you see oil on the floor under the washer and/or spray patterns along the interior cabinet walls, you can pretty much assume its time to replace the gearcase.

I hope you find this information helpful. If you require additional assistance, please let me know.

Whirlpool Model #: WTW4800XQ making a loud grinding noise during or at end of spin cycle. Help!

I have a similar model (WTW4850XQ1) that was making a very loud grinding/screeching noise during the agitation and sometimes the spin cycle. I unplugged and turned it on its front to get underneath and exposed the motor/transmission unit. Took the cover off the belt drive assembly and my drive gear was loose. Simple tightening down of the nut was an easy fix for me. But some times those plastic gears between the drive pulley assembly and transmission crack or the teeth wear down (think it's called the CAM). That is a fairly cheap and easy fix as well ($35). Repair Clinic website has free videos on how to diagnose and fix issues and parts as well. Worth a look.

It sounds like you have a motor coupling that is broken. There are videos on YouTube to show you how to repair this. Search for "motor coupling repair on direct drive".

Maytag Atlantis washer. Washer makes noise that approaches grinding, and the agitator doesn't spin. Rather, isn't connected to the motor. Spins semi-freely by hand, with a rough motion and noise

Your unit is gear driven and is contained in a mechanism enclosure. The roughness your feeling when turning it are the worn-out gears. One cause is it might have ran out or dried out of gear lubricant. The motor drives a belt to run the gears so the motors are running fine.Your gear box is the problem.

The washing machine started making a grinding noise during wash cycle (minor) and a much louder grinding noise during the spin cycle. Is this a bearing? and is it replacable? Maytag MAV7600

sounds like a bearing... although it could be the water pump... water pump is an easy fix... bearing is not an easy fix... take the belt off the bottom of the pump (under the machine) and see if it spins freely by turning it w/ your hand... or if it seems really stiff... if it looks good then it's def. your bearing...

Agitator ''dogs'' not gripping, agitator spins freely; tub rocks

Likely a broken dog itself was making the noise. They should all be replaced.

Pav3200washer making grinding noise

The tub is supposed to be locked untill the brake is released. When the machine is in the wash mode the tub is locked or else the clothes would all get knotted up. When the motor reverses the brake is released and the tub can turn freely. Check the pump for bad bearing.
