This is fixya, not western digital, but if you already have a drive fitted (C) this will be the master and the jumper set accordingly, if you have bought a second drive this will be the slave (D) or (E) dependant on drive letter allocation and the jumper set at slave

System can't find hard drive on main cable but it will run on the slave cable for the cd rom need to run on master how do i fix that? bryan thanks for any help

depending on your brand of hard drive if its western digital remove all jumpers and put on the master cable only, if it is alone,if there is another drive on the same cable then put jumper on master jumper which on western digital is in the center of the pin group,, your problem sounds like a jumper on the hard drive problem not a repair problem, i would look on the hard drive whichever brand and see jumper settings and make sure also that your jumper is good ,,,good luck I hope this helped

Can't find the IDE jumper settings for an LG gcc-4482b cd-rw/dvd rom drive

They are usually identified on the hard drive itself also...look really close to the jumper area...it's very tiny.

I couldn't find that drive either. But here is another LG drive with a manual, you could try the settings this one has and hope that LG is somewhat consistent. It shouldn't damage the drive anyway...it just won't work if you have 2 drives and you have them wrong. If you put this drive in the #1 position (at the end) of the IDE cable, it will only not work if the jumpers are in slave, if they are in Master or cable select it will work. If you only have one drive, just remove the jumper, it doesn't matter at all. If you have two drives, and can't find the info, you can just keep trying till you get it right. Hope that helps.

I am installing a new WD3200AAJB HD in a Dell Dimension 4550. This is the only HD in the system. There are also 2 CD drives and a floppy drive. I used the jumper settings the drive came with which pins...

Reinstall your old hard drive as master and install the new hard drive as slave.

Here is the link to jumper settings from Westrn Digital;

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1540&p_created=#jumper

If you've got your jumper settings wrong and installed your os on the 127 GB section of the 320 GB Hard drive and you change jumper settings and then you have problems you may need to reinstall the old hard drive as master and the new hard drive as slave. Reformat the new hard drive as 320 GB, and as a bootable drive. You can either do a disk copy from old to new or reinstall your os on the 320 GB drive. Please let me know how this goes. Have maxtor 40gb hd want to add 2nd WD hd in DEll dim8200

(if both drives on the same cable):
Your boot drive goes at the end of the primary data cable.
Your second drive goes on the middle connection of the same cable.
The red stripe on the data cable needs to be closest to the power connection (red stripe to pin 1).
The jumper on the boot drive set to master.
The jumper on the second drive set to slave.
Look in the BIOS to make sure it sees both harddrives.
Boot the system.. it will need to be partitioned and formatted if not already..
Regards..

How to set hard drive jumpers

a common hard drive jumper setting if its an ide sata, when you look behind the hard drive, you can see there are 4 places where you can set the jumpers...

there is cable select which you dont havce to put any jumpers at all. there is slave to which you may put 1 jumper there. and there is also master which sometimes is a single drive. any indication should be seen there above the jumpers which is indicated as MA- master, SL- slave CS - cable select.

hope this helps you in some way.

On a older system gateway w/ windows 95 hard drive went south I put another in, the two drives; org, wdcaviar 24300, the newer wd caviar wd800 are jumpers same

Jumpers on the newer Western Digital drives are different. If the drive is a single, then you should not have any jumpers on. If it's going to be a master and there's a slave, the jumper goes on the middle two pins of the five sets

Hard disk

you have to have both drives share the ide cable.on the back of each drive you will see a jumper, you will also see markings cs,mas, slave.the drive you want as master use the jumper on cs (cable select).the drive you want for slave use the slave jumper.if you just want to use your new drive put the jumper to cs first if that doesnt work put the jumper to master.

Dvd rom won't work

You forgot to check the jumper settings of the Hard Disk and the DVD Drive found at the back near the IDE and power cables. If you are using one IDE cable, then one jumper should be a Master, that's the Harddisk, and the DVD drive a Slave. If you are using two IDE cable then both must be Master.

You should check also the Harddisk jumper help settings printed on them, some harddisk needs the jumper settings for Slave presence on the same IDE cable.

If it doesn't work then It's either the cable or the DVD drive has a problem.
