Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

WD My book essential 400GB/GO USB 2.0

Everything ran fine for a couple of weeks, then it started clicking, and now I cant access any of my files.
I have about 200GB of music and recorded books on there.
I tried disconnecting,starting again etc but nothing is there.
When I check the disc management it syays the dirve is healthy but shows no data on there.
When I plug in the drive, after a while it starts the autoplay, but shows no files as it runs.
When I try to open the drive, it says it is not accessable because of an I/O error.
Can anything be done to recover my files, without costing an arm and a leg.
Thanks

Well, it should still be under warranty. Take it back to Walmart, and exercise the warranty, to get it replaced, at no cost to you.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

WD My Book-Delayed Write Failed-Can't access-Files deleting!

Hi when you buy a hard disk you do not get instructions on how to change from FATS to NTFS. Your hard drive is set to FATS by default,which limits you tranferring files up to 4GB.If you changing to NTFS does 2 things. 1.you can transfer bigger files.
2. You will lose all data on the drive so you have to save any files to another drive ect
To change to NTFS, go to Start then Right-click on My Computer and select Manage. Under Storage click on Disk Management. Now find your hard drive in the list and Right-click on it and select Format. Under File System change the Answer to NTFS and leave the Allocation Unit to default.Click on Perform Quick Format if you want. click OK and confirm your OK with losing all data on the drive,and your done.
Regards Bill

Open "My Computer".
If you have some other USB device (camera?) connected as the 'F:' drive, then the WD drive, when connected, will become the next-available letter, namely 'G:'.

Run a 'Check-Disk' against the WD drive, to check the integrity of the file-system.

My Book Essential does not show on My Computer - Can't access files.

No matter what I tried, I ws unable to get my "MyBook" working. My solution? Remove from case and voila, it's just a seial ATA drive attached to a small circuit board which converts it to USB. Disconnect from the circuitboard and plug into the motherboard. Imstant success. It failed as an external drive three weeks after the warranty ran out. WD support was zero help.
