Unplug the dvd from power and all connections and flip it over. You will see a slot that is underneath the dvd drive and is parallell to the front of the unit. You will see a white piece in the slot. You can use a small flat blade screwdriver or toothpick or whatever to slide the piece manually to the side and that will open the door.

If you look at the cover of the DVD drive itself, you will see a white wheel. This wheel has 2 magnetic washers in it. Once you have the cover with the wheel on it removed, unclip the two halves of the wheel remove one of the magnetic washers then reassemble everything as it was before (Minus one magnetic washer) and the drive should work perfectly. I have had three of these recorders all of the developed this problem, the first 2 were in warranty so I got them replaced, the third is one of those replacements and broke after the warranty so I fixed it myself (after MF services in cork said it was "Uneconomical to repair" and they said it needed a new hard drive, when the hard drive is in perfect working order!) It looks like the two magnets are too strong and overtime something in the drive wears down and causes this malfunction!
Hope this helps, and hopefully you haven't already bought a replacement!

Unplug the unit, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. See if it resets itself.
