F717 LCD Display Problem

I was going to purchase a F717 from a guy online, but he emailed me after I asked him to check the battery power. He said: "When I was testing the batteries and I turn on the camera with the cap on...the lcd display starts drawing lines. It looks like if the hologram blocked by the cap and the camera does not have any info and starts doing this. If I start the camera normaly it will have no problem." Anyone heard of a problem like this with the F717. This camera is basically new and has only been used 5 times over the past year. I'm wondering if a wire or something came loose inside and if it can be fixed. Thank you for your help.

Re: F717 LCD Display Problem

Yep, sounds like a bad connection on the display's internal cable. Need to check and see if the Electronic View Finder also shows the lines. If it does, then it may be a sensor problem, instead. If not, then the display has a bad connection or has gone bad itself. In either case, it's not a trivial issue.

LCD screen is black and will not display the image

The flexible cable to the LCD is to be checked for defects like breakage. Or the LCD is defective and both are a common problem.

The CCD fault is a known issue with Sony. My F717 was purchased in 2004, and developed exactly the same problem you described a year ago. Just before junking it recently (Dec 2009), I did a Google search and found that Sony will do free repairs. Their website makes this issue clear, and their online fault reporting system worked well in the UK. I got a printable freepost label, packakaged up the camera and sent it off. It came back a week later fully working again at absolutely no charge.

Sony DSC F717 blurry photos

I may have a partial solution but I have to ask a question before answering yours. Is the problem occurring when the camera is in auto-focus or manual focus? To reset the camera to factory settings, open the battery door and, using a pointed object, press the small button marked reset.

To download a .pdf version of the user manual, go to the Sony website below:

http://www.docs.sony.com/release/DSCF717revision.pdf

I did notice an article that mentioned a problem with the AF (auto focus) assist. I believe you can contact support on the Sony website to check for this particular problem.

DSC-F717 won't turn on

You are correct. The battery has lost it`s life.

Contact your nearest Sony dealer and ask them for the NP-F50 battery which I think your camera uses.

The reason why the battery still shows it is charging ( if your interested ) is due to the sensing cct - you will see your battery has three poles and not just 2. The sensing pin is faulty due to the buildt in PCB having a problem. The batteries probably are still ok inside, but the sensing cct does the actual charge control.

Best of luck.
