Sadly, Compaq printers (rebranded low-end Lexmarks, the X11 in your case) were not robust at all. Since they were originally created to be a free pack-in for new home PC's, they were not really meant to be used for more than a year or so. It sounds like there is some build up around the jet area, this build up will smudge around when printing. You can try to clean it out with a few cotton swabs although if you aren't careful, some cotton fibers might join in the mess. Another trick I have done in the past is run a piece of cardstock through the printer a few times. Sometimes the extra thick paper will help scrape off excess inks.

If it is a black cartridge but printer was added indicating a color cartridge - believe it gives the 3 lines. Perform cartridge management and specify a black cartridge.
