Question about Canon PowerShot S410 / IXUS 430 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Horitonzal lines We sent the camera back to canon thinking it had the ccd problem and it would be under warranty for that. They said the repair bill would be $100 and that it wasn't the ccd problem, but they wouldn't tell us what the repair would be for, so we had them send it back to us, unrepaired. Do you have any insight? From all that I read, we do have a ccd issue, but I'm not an expert.

Thanks for your input, but my horizontal lines show the lcd screen, not just in the finished picture. There is no clear picture to capture. It's dark, blurred, with the horizontal lines. It's an S410, bty.

I have just loaded some photos from my canon camera to my computer, and edited them. However, when I had finished editing, I looked at them life-size, and some had horizontal lines on, so I wasn't sure what was happening.

I finally decided to read them again or load them from the camera to the computer and see if I still had a problem. It turned out that the lines had vanished from all that I downloaded again, so it shows me that it is not the sensor which has the problem, but is some sort of problem of noise or somesuch thing from the camera itself. However, rather than pay £100 out or whatever, I have decided to just download the pix again from the camera card. It could be some sort of interference in the computer or connection lead environment, but the fact that the same signals from the card gave two different results, with the second being ablsolutely fine, shows me that it is not the CCD (sensor) in my camera - phew!, that's a relief. I don't know your camera model, but mine is the 400D, and I can take the card out and read it off a card reader - this might help to see if the pix are in fact fine. I would be surprised if the CCD has a problem. Why not take several batches of shots to see if the problem happens again?

Thanks for the response, Jan, I am sorry to hear it is not solveable more simply. Curious that Canon wouldn't say what the problem was. Occasionally, poor contacts in the battery compartment can affect the picture - I dont suppose that cleaning the contacts with a pencil rubber would help - worth a try. If, not, It could be an idea to replace it from somewhere like ebay - I just had a look, and there is one advertised, I think bidding is presently at £1,Item number:
280261636036, so take heart, it may be that replacing it would cost a lot less than the repair - I apologise if there is any problem about mentioning them on this site, as I know there is a list of repairers, but I imagine you will have already tried them.

When looking at the display shows wavy lines - same happens when you take a photo. But the display shows previous pictures taken on the card

Many Canon Cameras that were made a couple of years ago have a faulty CCD chip. Canon will repair the problem at no charge regardless if the warranty is expired or not. They will even pay postage to ship it back. I had to send in both my PowerShot SD110 and my Powershot S500 it took about two weeks from the day i sent them in to the day they returned. They handled everything just as a good company should. Contact Canon through their website for more information. Good Luck!

Horizontal lines and blurred pics distorted colors, sometimes no pic at all.

I assume that you have ruled out a bad LCD screen.
The only time I have seen horizontal lines in the pictures, it was a prelude to the CCD sensor failing. Sounds like a CCD sensor problem. If the CCD sensor is causing the problem, it will get worse soon.Usually the next thing to happen is that the colors will shift toward pink.
I suggest you phone Canon support and tell them the problem and that you suspect the CCD.Ask for a repair quote for a CCD replacement. If the product is under warranty Canon will repair it free of cost and also it will take care of the shipping fee.
