I'm having the exact same problem. I also have a dial and not buttons for the speakers.

STR-DE625 - The protector light keeps flashing everytime I turn the system on - all the manual says is that there's a short circuit and to turn off the receiver, eliminate the short-circuit problem and turn on the power again. The only thing that the receiver is hook-up to are the speakers. Could there be a short in the speaker wiring?

I have the same problem on an SR6001 which is about 10 months old. I've since sent it back under warranty so will wait to see the outcome. My unit went into this protect mode about two or three times a month after being on for about 20 minutes. A simple power off and on would clear the issue and the unit worked fine.

When home theater is turn on, protector push power is flashed on thee screen. player will not function further. volume level is 9. currently can't be turn down.

Protector means there is a short circuit somewhere in either the speakers, the wiring or inside the unit itself....you can try disconnecting all the speakers and then turning on the unit...if the protector goes away, then you have a bad speaker or bad wiring to the speakers....if the problem stays, then there is a faulty circuit in the receiver itself and will need to be serviced

Flashes protector

Protet mode is a special diagnostic mode that starts when a fault is detected.

When in protection mode the unit is prevented from starting by protection circuit, so to prevent further damage.

Check the speakers and speakers wiring, a contact in speaker wires, or faulty speakers can send the unit in protection.

Try unplugging power cable for one hour or so. then connect cable back and see if you get rid of protect state. Sometimes accumulation of electrostatic charges inside circuit capacitors can kick in protect mode. In that case unplugging the unit from main for some times can get rid of electrostatic charges, and reset circuits by draining power completely.
If that was the problem, you will not get Protect when plugging back power cable.

If you do all the above and still get Protect, then there is a real fault.

In that case the unit may be disassembled and tested to find the fault.

If that is the case I suggest contacting the manufacturer at the number listed on the owners manual, or asking a quote on repair to a local technician.

Error code - protector

Try disconnecting all the speakers from the back and turn the unit back on. If the "protector" display goes away, turn the unit back off and reconnect one speaker. Turn it back on and check for "protector". Repeat.

If you find that one of the speakers causes "protector" to appear, you either have a bad speaker cable or bad speaker. Try swapping each of those out to see what happens.

Try opening up the unit and giving the insides a good cleaning with a can of compressed air. That might help.

Looking fot tech help

The clicking might have been the speaker relay attempting to engage. Measure any DC on the output transistors. You should see (B+/-,0.0 and +/- 0/6V). Anything else and the protection circuit will kick in. Update this with the measurements and we'll go from there. Note that this unmit may have darlingtons in it in which case the +/- 0.6 will be +/- 1.1
