Question about Philips CDR796 2-Disc CD Recorder

1 Answer

Disk Recover message and trays are locked

My Philips CDR 796 has been trouble free until today. After recording a CD from TIVO (something I frequently do) the display came up with the message "Disk Recover". Now I can't eject the disk or find out what to do!

    Thanks for this. In fact, I also found that the machine reset itself when turned off at the mains. As regards 80 minute discs, I have had not trouble going almost to 80mins but as you say, the machine doesn't like being left to run to the end.

    By the way, aren't Philips USELESS at providing service!

I have had the same problem. To reset the machine when this happens: 1.Switch off with front panel switch (display dims, but still shows same message). 2. Switch off at mains socket, leave off for about 15 seconds. 3. Switch on at mains socket then front panel - machine should then start up as normal.

I have experienced the "disc recover" condition several times now, when a radio recording has run to the end of a disc, and for some reason the recording process has not terminated properly, resulting in the loss of the recording. I found by trial and error that if you switch the mains off at the socket without first switching off at the front panel, then the disc can become corrupted and useless.

I suspect it is partly dependent on the make of disc as my current batch of TDK RWs do it almost every time, whereas with my last batch (can't remember if they were Maxell or Memorex) seemed much better.

I think the only way to prevent the problem is to manually stop the recording before the end of the disc is reached, I suspect possibly before the 74 minute 'red-book' CD limit is reached, even on an 80 min. disc, though I haven't yet tested that theory properly.

Hope this helps,
HifiJohn

Where can I buy it? ( CDR 796 )

These types of questions are best served by search engines that yield immediate answers.

There ARE newer models that are still available. I always shop eBay for older stuff.

Availability will change from time to time.

Every blank cd I try to record on gives me a "no

You're trying to record on a data disc, not the required CDR-AUDIO or -MUSIC disk it needs to record. Register and download the manual for free at retrevo.com http://www.retrevo.com/support/Philips-CDR560-CD-Players-manual/id/23137ag310/t/2/

Tray B of my RCA CD Burner does not recognize any CDs

Are you using the correct disc type??

The manual states that only discs that are labeled:

"Compact Digital Audio Disc Recordable" (Audio CDR)

*or*

"Compact Digital Audio Disc Rewritable" (Audio CD-RW) can be used.

The popular discs labeled "Compact Recordable" and Compact Disc "Rewritable" are for use in computers, and can NOT be used on the recorder.

Page 16 of the manual shows the graphic of the logos detailed above. The manual can be downloaded for free below:

Recording trouble

Hi again,

I understand. Must be a glitch somewhere. Anyways, I already posted possible solutions here your original posting/problem. They were:
1. Power on the Philips FW-R7, leave the left tray empty and closed. Open the tray and put in a recorded CD (not a CDR but a regular CD from your music collection), close the right tray. Wait a couple of seconds as the FW-R7 reads the CD. Now open the tray, remove the music CD and insert your CDR. The FW-R7 should read the CDR without the error message and record to the CDR from any source. Let me know if this works for you;
2. laser cleaning or realignment (would need a service center);
3. try using lower then 40X blank CDs.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Not reading blank cdr audio disks to record onto..

Will it read audio cd's? Sounds like you need a new laser unless you have access to a philips COMPair system to diagnose / realign it.
