Posted on Jul 28, 2011

I am trying to connect my belkin surf n300 to my existing network. I want to use it as an access point so i can plug my TV in via ethernet cable to the Lan port. However i am having problems setting it up. I followed the instructions to turn the n300 into an access point but as i never have done this before i do not know what i am doing wrong as it will not connect to the other router

You will need a crossover cable to connect the two routers. They are different than standard LAN CAT cables and are available here:

Can you connect several n300 routers

Connect a computer to one of the Belkin's "LAN" ports with an Ethernet cable.Open a Web browser and enter "192.168.2.1" into the address bar. Press "Enter."Click "Login," then click "Submit."Make a note of the WLAN MAC address on the Status page.Click "Wireless Bridging" under the "Wireless" category.Click to check the two boxes "Enable wireless bridging" and "Enable only specific access points to connect."Type the MAC address of the Belkin router and the MAC addresses of the other wireless routers or access points that are participating in the bridged WDS network. If using Belkin devices, repeat the previous steps to obtain the WLAN MAC addresses, otherwise refer to the owner's manual of the wireless device to find the WLAN MAC Address.Click "Apply Changes" to save the settings.

There will be a lot of possible reasons on that, might be the wireless settings of your computer , you may try to remove all the old networks saved in your laptop and try connecting to it again, heres how 1. locate the wireless icon at the lower right hand corner of your laptop 2. Click on View available wireless settings 3. Click on Change advance Settings on the left side 4. You will have a small window with 3 tabs, one is general but just look for wireless tab 5. Box below you will see the list of the wireless name that was saved . 6. Delete everything, then make sure you apply it if there is or clicking on OK will do 7.Then try connecting again and make sure your password is correct.
or it might be your security application, try checking it and see if there's need to change especially if you got norton installed in your computer, try uninstalling and reinstalling it.

look up under your wireless security as it isnt set up right either in the router or on your computer.
look at page 8 to 13 of the PDF and follow the set up again. you will need the wire plugged in while doing this process but afterwords you can go wireless after a reboot.

Some routers won't allow wireless repeating (which I think is what you are trying to do). Some powerline adapters would be the easiest way to solve this as they work through your electrical cables. Plug one in where you already have a network connection and the other where you want it. You can then connect the cable to the N300 (provided it has multiple ethernet ports) and then connect the rest of your devices to the remaining ports. You'll need to do some googling to configure the router correctly.

its ok,it can be tough for non savvy users to use networking gear.belkins are very user friendly. the top port on the back of the router is where the modem cable goes, modem cable is a cat6 cable if you dont have a cable handy. the ac adaptor goes into the very bottom port.
