I don't have manual here for that exact model, but the DE error comes up when the refrigerator has not detected a defrost current within a certain amount of time. This is most often the result of a burnt out defrost heater. The refrig will likely keep working for a week or so until the frost builds up and blocks the air flow over the evaporator (the cooling coils behind the back wall of the freezer). The defrost heater is located at the bottom of said evaporator. Although new refrig's are more energy efficient now, this one should be able to live on. If you don't want to attempt repair yourself, call a local tech. (not the utility company or the national guys ie: A & E.... too many hororr stories about them) You can try your zip code in http://www.geappliances.com/buy/ and look for a servicing dealer. (NOT the big boxes. look for the smaller dealers, Thats were you'll get the best and fastest service.

The "de" is flashing on my display. I know it

Try the reset procedure:--- Turn the fridge freezer off by the wall socket for 10 minutes. Then reconnect the power again and see.If that is not helping then ,DE is most likely indicating a defrost problem.. open the freezer and take a look at the back of the freezer wall - is there a bunch of frost on that back wall? If the ice is collected there then unplug the unit for 24 hours to manually defrost it or take a hair dryer and defrost all collected ice to defrost the ice quickly. There also could be a temperature problem due to a defrost failure, easy to check the freezer temperature to confirm.---------------- Thank you.

I have a GE TFX28PB with an FF error light.

FF probably stands for "Frost Free". Yes. Your defrost circuit must have a temp sensor to tell it when the defrost is working. And for your fridge...it isnt.

The warm fridge/barely cold freezer are both common symptoms of extreme frosting of the cooling coils.

You need to manually defrost this unit and replace the defrost element and/or the controller board/power supply. You can buy them pretty cheaply online. Replacement is a lot easier if you just shut off the fridge and let it come to room temp before removing the coil cover.

Go to the GE website and get an online diagram of your fridge so you can see where the parts all reside. If you timer is mechanical it should have a way to manually trigger it to confirm the heater element works. IC based boards need special commands to go manual.....but you should be able to get this info from GE.

Good luck and be careful.

GE TFX24FHB system check shows problem code "de" but its still cold for now..

Hello,
It sounds as though you may have an issue with the defrost system. If the system check shows an open circuit on the frost heater or an open circuit for the defrost thermostat when the temp in the freezer is at zero then you will get this problem.

I would keep an eye on it for a couple days and see if frost starts to accumulate on the rear wall of the freezer. If so you will manually have to defrost the freezer so the machine can maintain temperature. When you have the rear wall removed from the freezer you will need to check the resistance of the defrost heater.

Let me know how you make out and if you have anymore questions. Thanks,
Bill

Ge side by side refer, no model number available at this time

a flashing DE usually indicates a defrost problem on any unit, they don't flash indicating they are in defrost, soner or latter the problem will show. You could have an intermittant bi-metal or most likely it being a ge - a bad defrost heater. and there is always the possibility that it could be the board. It would have to be trouble shot properly
