It sounds like the drum bearings may need replacing. This is not a small job, so be sure of what you're doing before you attempt to fix it yourself. Please feel free to get back to me for instructions on replacing the seal and bearings.

Unable to do that.
Remove rear panel from washing machine.
Roll belt off the pulley.
Undo bolt that holds pulley on and remove pulley.
Remove the front panel and door.
Remove gable off the drum, it's held on by clips all around.
Remove drum out of the machine.
Remove the seals and bearings, noting their positions.
Fit new bearings to the tub and new seal to the shaft.
Put drum back in machine.
Put pulley back on the shaft and bolt on.
Put belt back on the pulleys.
Fit front gable back to tub.
Refit front and rear panels and test run the machine.
(The new seal and bearings should also come with instructions, refer to these for diagrams etc.)

Yup, sounds like it is the tub/drum bearings going out. Mine did the same, started making lots of noise but still functioned great, after about 17 years too. Its a very common problem with the older Neptunes. I changed my bearings myself out on the driveway, that way I had lots of room to do it because its really needed to scatter all the parts and pieces to do it right. There is a great self help fix-it guide that this one guy did and posted on line that works great for this. Just Google "Neptune washer bearings" and select the one at "mlittle". I know youve probably already got this done but the fix-it guide I mentioned is so good for this it is worth mentioning again. Hope this helps.
