Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional With Servise Pack 2 (e8503040) for PC

1 Answer

Pagefile.sys is blocked. It is being used by another application

When I scan the computer, the results show that this file is blocked. It cannot be opened. Since the computer is very slow I assume that this maybe the reason. Is there a possibility I can do something to improve this? Thanks,

What do you mean that you have space elsewhere.
Do you have other partitions on the same HDD?
Try this pagefile.sys is a file windows uses to set aside space for virtual memory. If you have 8 GB of RAM, you should have no need for this and can turn it off if you want.

Right click on My Computer and choose properties (or go control panel -> system). On the left, choose Advanced System Settings.
On the tab that pops up, at the top (in the 'Performance' section of the tab) choose Settings.
In the next window, choose the 'Advanced' tab and you will see the section for virtual memory at the bottom. Just click change and you will be able to set the size or turn it off completely. set your initial pagefile size to 400 set the max to 1000 MB.

You will have separate pagefiles for each OS. You cannot use a single pagefile for multiple OS installs, they are unique to each OS.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from the link below:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebyt...are_d5756.html

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application. (If the file won't run correctly, try renaming it to something else, like "gogetup.exe", then double click it to install it. Some variants of malware will prevent the "mbam-setup.exe" file from running.)

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full System Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Norton is famous for this type of result, but very effective antivirus. Some softwares. have to access system files, which the antivirus interprets as an attempt made by an external programs attempts to use either a sys file or alter the registry, Norton reacts by blocking that process declaring " possible virus and blocks it.
To enable the software, add the *.exe file in the list of accepted/excluded, such that this nehavior is allowed by Norton.....................sodeep

Page file

Computers use the RAM of the computer to store the active programs, and perform other operating system functions. Obviously, there is a limit to how much RAM is available for this function. This is why Windows runs faster with more RAM installed.

Since Windows allows you to open multiple programs and switch between them, it is more efficient to "swap" inactive programs or parts of programs out of RAM, so a special disk files is created - "pagefile.sys".

Pagefile.sys is related to the "Virtual Memory" function of Windows.

You can see the pagefile setup by right clicking on My Computer, the go to Properties/Advanced/Performance/Advanced.
