How do I prevent my neighbor from using my wireless router?

If you do not have any wireless network security enabled on the router, your neighbor can see this SSID and connect to the network without authorization. While this is generally frowned upon as being unethical, it is technically not illegal as you have "made the network available" by failing to secure it. The easiest way to secure the network is through the use of a WEP key or a WPA pass-phrase. WEP keys are generally 5, 10, 13 or 26 randomly generated characters long. WPA pass-phrases are just that - a phrase such as "The sun is yellow". Either method will prevent unauthorized users from accessing your network. Only those individuals who possess the key or pass-phrase are granted access.

These options is located under the Wireless > Wireless Security tabs from within the router administration. After login you can change the password.

I need to enter a lock on my pc because there is a young boy getting on my actcess. he sit's out side. using my system info, and my wireless printer started printing his info for his school. I also...

for your phone to use your connection and to stop people printing you would be best to change the WPA/WEP key. If your security is set to WEP I would strongly reccomend you change to WPA2

To change code login to your router

from IE type one of the following, different routers have different address's
192.168.0.1
192.168.1.1
192.168.0.254

Look for wireless settings down the side and choose security, from here you can specify a password for access to your system. Should stop any intruders

How do I go back and set up a security password so the neighbors can't use my wireless service? Router has been set up for years.

Go to your IP Adress (printed below your router, usually 192.168.0.1) enter the user credentials (commonly admin/password) and go to router security. If this is to complicated or you don't remember credentials, reset the router or tell the neighbors that you will sue them

My neighbor is connecting to my router,Iwould like to stop him

For wireless security:
You need to login to your modem and add security, so that you can connect and your neighbour cannot. Unless you have changed your login details, look at the back or underneath your modem. It should tell you what your defualt login is and how to get to it. You normally access your modem using a web browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox etc.) and typing in the address e.g. 192.158.0.1 in the top/address line.
Then you will be prompted for a username and password (see what the sticker on the modem says, e.g. admin and password.
Once inside that menu, look for WLAN or Wireless settings. You can then setup security e.g. WEP or WPA and some other options. Set the security to WPA and choose a password that you can remember. Once you have chosen Done/Apply/OK or similar, you will probably lose your connection. If you then choose your wireless, you will be prompted to enter a password.

The other alternative is, if you have a desktop connected by ethernet to the modem and don't need wireless, you can go into the same menu and switch wireless off.

About 1 yr ago, I allowed my neighbor to connect w/my linksys router. Now, our IPS has instituted a "fair access policy," and I need to remove my neighbor from my network. Can u tell me how to do this?

Change the WEp/WPA security key and don't let eh neighbor have it. That will kick him out of the router. You could also go into the router table and look at the MAC address associated with his IP and block that IP address and that will kick him out as well. If you block his IP and your router is set for DHCP he can log out and log back in and get a new IP address. Blocking by MAC address and using WEP/WPA security key is the best way to block unauthorized access to your router. The WEP/WPA key will be located on the page that router Wireless Security settings are on when you access your router.

I want to stop my neighbors from using my router/modem, can you help me?

Hello

All you need to do is to to enable the router security, which will enable you to add a password.

HERE is how you do it:
Type 192.168.0.1 (this will get you in your router) and once you're in, go to the "Security" tab or option and click on WEP or WPA, select the encryption, choose a password and click save or apply.

Hope this can be of help.

Kind regards
Andrea

How do i block someone from illegally stealing my wireless intern

Hello,

You have two options to stop someone from stealing your wireles connection.

The first is to use a more secure encryption.
Use WPA2 personnal with AES encryption.
You can set this security mode by logging on to your router and changinhg the wireless security.

The next solution is to turn on MAC filtering and make sure her computer is not listed as a safe MAC address.
This is also turned on from the router.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Pat

I cannot get password set up to keep unwanted

Please turn off the "broadcast" feature of your Linksys router. This will turn off the "advertising" your router is currently doing, allowing your neighbors to find your network.

Next, you can set your router to allow only certain MAC address devices to use its features. You will need to find out the MAC address for each of your devices.

Next, you will have to setup a password situation to allow the logon. Currently, your scheme is not working. I'm not sure why.

I use Network Magic for my network management duties. It is a free download and eval period after which Cisco (maker of Linksys) would like for you to purchase a license. After the free eval period, Cisco allows you to continue to use the program but not all features unless you pay. I use the paid pro version and I love it.

NM will track intruders, help you share resources, repair broken connections and many other tasks.

P.S. There are no intruders in a wired system! If you can use a wire, instead of wireless, you will not only be more secure but faster as well.

I hope this information helps you ... Thanks for posting your Q at FixYa.com

Neighbors can use our connection to log on to laptop

Consult your users manual for setting up either MAC Address Filtering, which will allow you to enter the physical addresses of your devices (unique like a fingerprint.)

AND/OR

Enabling Wireless Encryption (Wireless Security), which would require you to enter a pass code or pass phrase in order to access your networks assets.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance. If this information was helpful, please take a moment to rate the solution. Thank you.
