I have the same problem, except that my husband dropped my camera first. All of my old pictures still show, but the one's he tried to take after dropping it just show a black screen. I tried to take a video to see how that would work, and the sound is still recorded but no picture to go with it. Any DIY remedies would be greatly appreciated. I hate to go out and buy a new camera if I don't have to.

I have black screen with all other info correctly when I turn the camera on. I called the Sony customer service and they were not willing to cover this as an issue with the manufacturer. Many other Cyber Shot models, however, have had the same problem but they did not include DSC N-1. The flat repair charge is $171 after warranty is expired. Is it worth to repair? Any suggestions? Same problem:
Pictures currently on the drive show up
Camera will flash correctly when a picture is taken
However, result of picture is just a black screen, same with video

    No physical damage...

I turn the lens on but have black screen. It takes pictures but shows black. This problem is rampant with other Cybershot models but Sony says DSC-N1 is "not listed" to be repaired for free. I did everything with Sony on-line helpers but have no good results. What do you suggesst?

If you can, take a good look at your lens. In this case, this is an actual lens of a DSC-N1 in which you can see lines in it. This is not a shutter, it's physically cracked.

This assembly is fairly easy to replace. However, I don't know what Sony would charge for the lens. This is why you can take pictures but everything comes out black. Not sure exactly what this piece does but I do know it has something to do with the transmission of light that goes through the lens.

If this is your case, for sure you will need to replace the lens assembly. Another thing you can try for those of you who do not have a broken lens, is put a flashlight right up against the lens and see if the display shows any light. In any case, this is your problem.

Make sure you have a correct setting- go to the Manual.
If you are certain all is well there- then it colud be an internal failure.
Check out customer support at Sony re this.
