Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Air Flow to Refrigerator keeps getting blocked by ice buildup. Seems to be only a main board on back of refrigerator - upper left facing rear of appliance. (no defrost timer in frig.) Is the main board replacement the only option if defrost thermostat and defrost heater are operational?

GE GSL22JFTABS Frost buildup on back wall of freezer and ice maker not making ice

Your unit is not defrosting, causing the unit to build up ice and not allow the air to flow. There are 3 possibilities, listed with the most likely first.
1. The DEFROST HEATER in the freezer section, just behind the cover along the back wall of the freezer.
2.The DEFROST BI-METAL which is just about the HEATER, it is a small round thermostat that keeps the HEATER from getting too hot
3. If both of those parts are good, then you have a bad MAIN BOARD. The board regulates the defrost cycle, which replaced the older defrost timers.

GE Cafe refrigerator stopped working, both freezer and upper compartment not keeping cool.

Is your compressor kicking on? Does the compressor fan work? Is your condenser grill clear of debrie and dirt? Can air get in the back of the refrigerator (no stored items blocking air flow)? Are the condenser coils iced up?

If the compressor seems to be working. Do you have an ice buildup on the freezer side? You might have to remove the inner back panel to check it!

Not cool enough

Make sure the air door in the refrigerator compartment is open at least a little and not blocked by anything. This is located just to the left of the bottom drawers. Also check the air inlet located at the top left rear of the refrigerator for flow. If none is present then you have a frost buildup caused by frequent opening and closing (common to these models) an ice cube dispenser door hanging partly open (Also common). Check this by looking from the inside of your freezer door down the ice chute. A flashlight helps a lot here. Also may be a defrost issue.

Subzero 590: small upper fan inside the refrigerator not working

The fan circulates the cold air accross the evaporator to distribute the cold air around the fridge. It appears that your defrost system isn't working since you have ice buildup. You have a defrost heater and defrost thermostat and timer or motherboard which need to be checked to determine the problem. How to check everything http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Fridge not cold - freezer fine

ice buildup will most likely block the air flow.
if so the air will not be able to enter fridge section. Check air vent in fridge side if you can hear the fan and get no air flow then its blocked - common defrost thermostat failure.

to temporarily clear the problem just use a hair dryer on the ice build up area

REFRIGERATOR NOT WORKING BUT FREEZER IS

The ice could be related to a defrost problem. Check the back wall of the freezer for ice buildup. The evaporator coils are behind it and if iced heavily will block the circulation of cold air.

Freezer working fine but fridge isn't

Either the damper that the air flows up through is closed or the return air flow vents are blocked with clear ice.

Do you feel the air come out all the way at the top of the duct assembly when the freezer door is opened (but it then stops when the door is closed)?

If so, then it sounds like your return air flow vents are clogged. These are located to the left and right of the duct assembly in the rear/bottom of the refrigerator section. Sometimes you may have to slowly pour hot water into these vents to get the clear ice to thaw. The water should go down into the freezer section behind the evaporator and then out the drain in the back.

If you do not get the air to flow out the top of the duct assembly then the damper is staying shut. This could be either a bad damper in the duct assembly or the main board my not be sending voltage to the damper. Hope this helps.

change the adaptive defrost board located in the upper right corner of refrig under the panel. remove panel by pulling on panel towards you from the finger holes in the rear. remove two 1/4 inch screws and two phillips screws. defrost manually with hair dryer behind panel in freezer.
