Western Digital My Book freezes computer on boot up.

My computer freezes up when I go to boot it up while the Western Digital My Book (1TB) connected in the USB drive. My operating system is Windows XP and it freezes on the Windows blue screen. Any solutions?

Just got it at costco, and have the same problem. Installed the drivers from WD, and still no luck. Only I am using firewire, and have not tried USB (due to speed). Here is the driver.txt that came with the WD firewire driver.

This executable will install the 1394 SES Driver (WDC SAM) needed by the Firefly 1CS & 1Q.

This installer should also be backward compatible with the Galaxy 2T.

I have the exact same problem. I am running XP MCE through USB. I've played around with all BIOS options, but no luck. I was going to buy a firewire card to see if that would work, but it seems not.

    Anyone?

I have a WD MyBook 1TB with USB, Firewire and eSATA Connections. I use eSATA Connection!
On Boot of Windows XP I get a Blue Screen: Reason is incompatible ACPI BIOS (has to be upgraded). This doesn't happen with other eSATA Disks!
If i connect the disk when the computer is up, everything is o.k.!

My Book freezes computer on boot up

    Solution:
In the system BIOS, disable the Boot from USB device option and the USB Legacy Support option. Doing this will allow the PC to complete the boot process to the internal hard drive and allow you to enter Windows. If this does not work for any reason, you should boot your PC before connecting the USB drive. Once the computer is fully booted into Windows, connect the USB drive and wait for the operating system to detect the drive.

I have the 250GB WD My Book connected to a USB 2.0 under XP service pack 3, and have the same problem the boot hangs, so I usually fire it up afterwards which is less convenient. I've also noticed that my 8Gig USB stick also causes a similar delay in bootup though for a shorter period. It's as though it is checking the memory on these devices. I've never timed the WD as I don't have that much patience!

I also have a My Book Home edition 1TB drive.
    Mine is connected with Firewire.

The logo boot screen stays up and XP never comes up when the drive is online. I have not yet tried disabling the bios boot options mentioned in another post, but I think it is lame to have to turn that off. especially since this is not USB for me.

Same problem with a WD MyBook 500Gb...   difficult recognition by system (Xp). Only 1 out of 20 connections....  ???  and when it works usually comes to a system crash within 3-4 hrs.

WHAT IS WD GOING TO DO????

i have the same problem. when i try to use my 500 gb external drive my book i get an BSoD. - xp sp2.

Just for the record, the OS is irrelevant. This happens to me with Vista 64 Ultimate, as well. This is on a Dell Inspiron 530. I am guessing (since it happens before the system starts loading the OS) that the bios switch is the only viable solution.

I have the same problem. I strongly suspect the system is attempting to boot from the Life Book. This problem started only when I started changing drive letters.

With the WD External HD connected to computer through USB Cable, computer freezes on startup. The gentleman who stated the issue of the legacy USB switch being diabled in bios is correct. Use a regular connector for mouse and keyboard and lose the legacy USB in the bios. It works.

I have other USB devices that won't work if I disable the USB Legacy Support.
In Fact, in my notebook bios thr'es no such thing as USB Legacy Support.
I own an Asus A4BL with pentium 4 at 3,2 gb, 2Gram, Win XP.
My hard drive is a Mybook Essential 1TB

Mine boots fine if I unplug (better yet, hold the flat button down on the back for about 5 seconds, and it will turn off).

That's really brilliant, but I don't have ANY way to disable legacy USB support in BIOS on my Acer Aspire 5920G notebook. No other ideas?

That's brilliant indeed, by I don't have ANY obvious way to disable USB legacy support in my bloody simple BIOS in an Acer Aspire 5920G notebook. Any other ideas, anyone?

I have had this problem in the past with my external harddrive. You have to go into the bios and turn off legacy usb. But if you have a usb mouse or keyboard (wireless or wired) they won't work. But your pc should bootup with the harddrive plugged in. This was how I fixed the problem with my WD My Book 750GB but I can't promise it will work with anything else. BUT DON'T TURN OFF LEGACY USB IF YOU HAVE USB MOUSE OR KEYBOARD!

Apologies, I must have missed reading solution #1 even though I thought I read it through.

Every time i plug my 1TB western digital mybook in my computer freezes and when i shut it down it wont restart until i unplug it from the computer i have no idea what it could be please help

That needs a motherboard drivers upgrade.

What happens is that the BIOS starts detecting and checking booting devices.

Earlier motherboards are not able to detect external hard drives and boot from them.

So the solution to this is to turn off the computer and then disconnect the cable.

Remove safely the HD and then restart.

God Bless You!

My western digital 1tb external hard disk freeze my pc when i conected i must restart after restart is ok

every system has a limit to the devices that can be connected to them.1tb is a very large memory and is capable of making the system or the hard disk freeze causing you to restart.it is most probably that your system cannot utilize it while it is on and so has to be re-boot so as to make the hard disk boot up with the system.one very good sign of this is if your system takes a bit of longer time to boot with the hard disk connected from the start,if so my advice is for you to upgrade your system.like the ram and processors should be increased.hope this was helpful?

Computer freezes on start-up when western digital 1tb external hdd plugged in to computer, computer starts fine with it unplugged. The hard drive can be plugged back in after start-up.

This is a known problem with these drives. Disabling USB legacy support in your Bios should solve the problem., it did in my case but at the expense of not being able to boot from a USB device. Definitley a problem with their enclosure or drive.

You need to go into the BIOS of your computer and change the boot order of your computer.  Your computer must be set to boot from your main hard drive only.
