1. ground - syst ground
2. +12v - power +12v
3. senso - sensor
4. pwm - cpu fan control

What makes 511-cpu fan not detected and 512-chassis not detected

Are you seeing this error on a system you built or a pre-built system? If it is a pre-built system, check that the fans are running. Next check where the fans are plugged in, the CPU fan must be connected to the CPU fan connector on your motherboard. The chassis (rear case fan) only needs to be connected to the motherboard if you want the monitoring/PWM (modulated fan speed) option. If your CPU fan is powered directly from the power supply, change this.

If this is a system you built or recently updated the case, check your fan power connections, as above. Next check the fan speed. My ASUS board will give the "CPU fan not detected" error if the CPU fan speed is too slow. A different CPU fan will solve the problem. (I got my fan with the CPU; it works fine.)

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with more information about your system for more assistance.

My computer was in the shop for something unrelated to this problem and now that I have it back it (the cpu fan) sounds like I'm running a vacume it's that loud.

Hi Tim,

I can not say for sure that this is whats happening, but from your description, it seems logical.

After work is done on a computer, sometimes one of the ribbon (data) or power cables isn't completely secured. It can move around within the case, especially if it is transported (like back from a shop).

On occasion one of the cables comes in contact with a CPU fan (or any of the fans in a computer). If it does, the noise they make is horrendous.

Fortunately, the fix is easy. Get a flashlight and a screwdriver.
  • Open the box.
  • Switch the computer on
  • Locate the noise source if possible paying attention to the areas around the fans.
  • When you find it switch off.
  • If it was a cable just relocate it out of the way.
If this turns out not to be the problem, please comment back with more detail.

Best regards

WANT TO KNOW HOW TO INSTALL A PROCESSOR

First you will need to know what kind of socket you have on your motherboard, so you can purchase the correct CPU for your replacement. Intel and AMD have lots of different socket sizes so don't overlook this point. If you have the CPU that you are going to replace, all you need is a screwdriver, thermal paste, and CPU fan.

1) Open the case cover with screwdriver, and open side panel to locate CPU.

2) Using a screwdriver or sometimes just release clamps to take off the CPU fan.

3) Release lever on the side of the socket to release the CPU.

4) Pull out old CPU and install new CPU, (Be very careful not to bend the pins on the CPU.)

5) Put small amount of thermal paste on top CPU.

6) Replace CPU fan and connect power to the fan, replace cover.

Now in a perfect world this should be it, but if you upgraded you CPU you should go into you BIOS and check the settings for your CPU. To make sure the voltage is correct.

The location of the cpu cooling fan

Look underneath your Laptop, you should see some ventilators in the casing, you CPU fan will be near there. If you've got you laptop running, just feel around any of the vents, the heatsink, ducting and fan will be locate close to where you can feel warm air flow.

My CPU fan doesn't work. When I turn the computer on, it gives me the HP blue screen then a black screen saying that the CPU fan is broken. When I look at it, it has a lot of dust. I am wondering if I...

The cpu fan is located on top of the heatsink

the heat sink is a large silver square with slits on the top.

It's really easy to indentify

Just clean it out using some computer air spray, found at bestbuy and walmart.

Also, when your looking at it, make sure the cable is connected to the motherboard

I hope this helps!

ASUS P5KPL-AM CPU fan connection.

You should still be able to connect the 3 pin connector of the fan to the 4 pin connector on the mobo, the keying tab is offset so that you cannot connect it to the wrong pins.
If you still don't want, or can't connect it there, simply go on the Bios (press delete after you turn on your computer) and you will find an option to monitor CPU fan speed.
If you need any more help, let me know
