    My laptop is doing the same thing AND suspiciously enough it's the same Gateway model and everything , i can see the windows still open on
    the screen however it's flashes completely dark. None of the programs close
    i just can barely see them! I think it's simply the internal lamp or something
    but the flashing usually stops after a few minutes :S

Some searching on forums convinced me the inverter had failed. Picked one up for $65, removed the frame around the screen, removed the mounting screw for the inverter, and unplugged both ends of the old and plugged in the new. Put it back togeher and fired it up, bright again. Key here was that a remote monitor still worked which meant video card was OK. The lamp could have been bad, but apparently the life of lamps is pretty decent.

No video at power up

See if the problem is the graphics chipset before going any further.

If it isn't then the problem lies with the Video Cable, (Gateway = LCD Cable), or the Display Assembly.

The heading states Gateway LT2104u Netbook PC. This is what I'll be basing the solution on. However the main part of the solution, will apply to all laptops/netbooks.

1) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port (Connector) on the Left side of the netbook.

[ External VGA display port.
This is an example of a VGA connector, (Port), and a VGA Cable,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector ]

The external VGA monitor can be a CRT type, (Cathode Ray Tube. Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor that has a VGA cable.

2) Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the netbook on.

By default the display should be shown on the external monitor.
IF not;

A) Press, and hold down on the Fn key, and at the same time tap once on the F5 key.
(The Fn key is at the Bottom/Left of the Keyboard. The F5 key is at the Top of the Keyboard)

No display still?
There are at least 3 display options;

1) Internal monitor of the laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of the laptop AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY

You may have to hold down on the Fn key, and tap the F5 key more than once.

IF, NO display shows up on the external monitor, you have a bad graphics chipset.

[ Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_circuit

The GPU is the graphics chipset,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU

The GPU for a Gateway LT2104u Netbook PC is an Intel GMA950 ]

IF, display does show up on the external VGA monitor, you have either problems with the Video Cable, (LCD Cable), or the Display Assembly.

LCD Cable:

1) Connections;
The LCD Cable connects TO the motherboard, and TO the back of the LCD screen, in the Display Assembly.

IF, either connection is loose, you will have display problems.

Check both connections.
This requires partial disassembly of the netbook to access the motherboard side of the LCD Cable.

Also requires partial disassembly of the Display Assembly (Gateway = LCD Module) to access the connection at the back of the LCD screen.

2) Damage;
Observe the LCD Cable on the motherboard side. See if there are any obvious signs of damage to the LCD Cable's sheath.
The most susceptible area to damage is the area under the left Hinge.

However, the LCD Cable should be removed, and a continuity check of the cable should be performed with a multimeter, set to Ohms.

(By checking the connections, you are at a point anyway, that removing the LCD Cable should be no problem)

LCD Cable checks out OK?
LCD Module problem; (Display Assembly)

The LCD Module consists of the;
1) LCD Bezel,
2) Camera Module,
3) LCD Module Brackets, (Includes Hinges)
4) Microphone Module,
5) Wireless 3G Antenna,
6) WLAN Antenna cables, (Wires),
7) LCD Screen Assembly,
8) LCD Module Cover.

Primer:
An LCD screen does not produce light. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight can be a CCFL, or a series of LED lights.
(CCFL = Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses)

The Backlight for the Gateway LT21 series of Netbook PC's, is a series of LED lights.

There is no screen Inverter that is replaceable by the consumer.
The repair is to replace the entire LCD Module.

http://support.gateway.com/s/notebook/2009/gateway/lt/lt21/LT21sp4.shtml

To conclude:
If the problem isn't the graphics chipset, (Motherboard replacement), and it isn't the LCD Cable, the problem is the LCD Module.

Gateway LT21 series of Notebook PC's, Service Manual, (Free),

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-gateway

Go to where it states Gateway 400. Drop down to the second line, (EC54), and scroll across to LT21 in blue.
Left-click on LT21.

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the file name (LT21) it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up.

{ You can save this Service Manual to your computer. This way you can burn it off to a CD disk, AND remove it from the computer to save harddrive space, and not have to temporarily download it again }

My screen went black while i was working on it and shut down. went 2 power up an no video. any known problems with this model gateway.

Firstly, I would suggest you to try it on another another/External Monitor through Vga port or Hdmi port if available (I can't make it specific since you didn't mention whether your system is Laptop or Desktop). If the video/display shows up on the external monitor, then the problem is with the Lcd of your computer. In most cases, it can be repaired. It'll only need to replaced some parts, maybe capacitors or inverter or backlight led. While the machine is On, look at the display very carefully, and check if you can see the display even if it's dark or not. If you can see the display without light, the problem is with the Backlight, replacing the backlight tube will fix it. But to do this, you'll need to know how to disassemble the monitor/display and how to fit it. All electrician's materials like soldering iron, soldering paste, soldering wire, screwdrivers should be ready. I would suggest you to call and bring a technician or visit a service center.

If the video/display is not showing on the other monitor/external monitor, then the problem is with the system inside the box/case. To start troubleshooting this, first turn off the machine, remove hard disk, Cd/Dvd drive, Ram/s and boot again. Can you see anything on the display, if so, the problem is with one of the removed units, first install the Ram and reboot the system, and then followed by Hard disk and Cd rom. Most problem with no/dark display is related to ram, in rare cases (if unfortunate it with the Bios chip on the motherboard). Sometimes display/video card. If Ram isn't the problem, then your best option replace the motherboard. Some service also repair laptop/desktop motherboard. You can contact Gateway for more details using this form (click here).

If you follow the above instructions correctly, you'll be able to find out the source of the problem.

I wish you good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

If the brightness in the properties section is up, and your brightness keys on the keyboard doesn't do it, then you'll need to take it in for repair-good chance the back light is going..

Hp zt1180 monitor went very dark

Some laptops have a brightness setting in the BIOS, some have a specific button, and some have a configuration program. If you cannot see the screen in a darkened room, your CCFL backlights are not working. Cold Cathode Fluorescent bulbs are tubes along the sides of the display, or top/bottom that light up the screen. If they are not lighting at all, or you can see that only part of the screen is lit, send it back and ask for a replacement or repair. This is assuming it is still under warranty...
If not, prepare to spend some bucks.

The screen on my Toshiba satellite p205 went dark on me i check and u can see the window but really dark i replace the lcd screen and the problem persist help please what can the problem be my video...

To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be a faulty inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out; usually the CCFL lamp fails before the inverter.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

THE SCREEN IS DARK. tHE LOPTOP TURNS ON BUT HAS NO DISPLAY. IT WILL NOT WORK ON EXTERNAL DISPLAY.

Your video card is bad. A bad LCD or backlight lamp would not prevent an external monitor from working. Even without a hard drive or Windows installed you would still get a text display on your screen. Some laptops have replaceable video cards but some are soldered to the motherboard and can't be replaced. This is a job for a repair shop, not a DIY project.

It sounds like LCD backlight problem. Bring your laptop to a repair shop.

Display after rain went black

If your video output works fine when connected to an external monitor, then the issue is with the LCD display panel. I’m afraid the only way to fix this is to have the LCD panel replaced.
