Hard to get a smudge inside but basically you take it apart and clean the inside of the glass

My officejet pro 8500A prints black vertical lines down the page when I make a copy. I have cleaned and aligned the printheads. What else can I do?

Happened with me too. Turned out to be a small sticky smudge on the ADF glass. That is the smaller glass scan area to the left of the large glass scanning area.
When using the ADF to scan or copy, make sure the smaller glass area is clean along with the rollers.

I need to clean the under side of the glass.

Cleaning the glass on what we call a "disposable printer" can be interesting. The simple process is to start pulling screws that appear to permit access to the scanner bed. For Lexmarks this generally involves an almost full disassembly of the machine. If you do get it apart be very careful not to let any dust or debris or solvents get near or on the scanner head, this will likely prevent it from properly calibrating and stop the entire machine from running. New all-in-one machines are generally designed so that if one function fails, the entire machine fails. I would say to just purchase a new machine, a repair bill will easily equal that cost and a novice repair job has a good chance of rendering the machine inoperable.

I have a vertical black line on the right side of my copies

Go to the HP website and read their solution. Here is what I found:
Issue When you copy, fax, or scan an original, the resulting output contains vertical bands, lines, or streaks in one or more colors. When you print the original, the output is normal. Figure 1: Sample output with vertical white or black linesc01892760.gif Figure 2: Sample output with vertical colored bands or linesc01892761.gif Solution one: Reset the All-in-One If there is static interference, or loose connections with the product, this can result in bands or lines in the copy, fax, or scan output. To resolve this issue, check the product connections and reset the product.
  1. Make sure the product is powered on, and then disconnect the power cord from the product.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the product, and then disconnect it from the computer.
  3. Reconnect the USB cable to the computer, and then reconnect it securely to the product.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet, and then reconnect it to the wall outlet.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the product.
  6. Press the Power button (c01892763.gif ) to turn on the product.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , see the next solution.
Solution two: Clean the All-in-One and make a blank copy If the scanner glass or the white underside of the lid has fingerprints, smudges, lint, dust, or other debris, this can slow performance and affect copy and scan quality. To resolve this issue, clean the All-in-One. Before you begin, gather the following materials:
  • Several clean, soft, lint-free cloths
  • Mild glass cleaner
CAUTION: Use only glass cleaner to clean the scanner glass. Do not use cleaners that contain abrasives, acetone, benzene, or carbon tetrachloride. These substances can damage the product. Avoid isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) because it can leave streaks on the glass. Step one: Clean the scanner glass and lid
  1. Press the Power button (c01892763.gif ) to turn off the product, and disconnect the power cord from the product.
  2. Open the scanner lid. Figure 3: Open the scanner lidc01760887.gif NOTE: Your product might vary in appearance from the one shown in the figure, but the solution is the same.
  3. Spray a clean, soft, lint-free cloth with mild glass cleaner. CAUTION: Do not spray the glass cleaner directly on the glass to avoid damaging the scanner.
  4. Wipe the scanner glass and the white underside of the scanner lid with the dampened cloth. Figure 4: Scanner glassc01891674.gif Figure 5: Scanner lidc01891675.gif
  5. Dry the scanner glass thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth, or chamois to prevent spotting, and then dry the white underside of the scanner lid. NOTE: Do not use paper-based wipes or tissues that can leave fiber residue.
  6. Close the scanner lid.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the product, and press the Power button (c01892763.gif ) to turn on the product.
Step two: Make a blank copy
  1. Remove any originals from the scanner glass.
  2. Load plain white paper in the input tray.
  3. Press Start Copy Black to make a blank copy.
If the copy is clean, there is no need to continue troubleshooting. If the copy has vertical bands, lines, or streaks, there might be dust inside the product, poor internal connections, or the product might be damaged. See the next solution. Solution three: Service the All-in-One If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the product. Causes
  • Static interference
  • Loose USB cable or power cord connection
  • Fingerprints, smudges, lint, or dust on the scanner glass
  • Dirt or debris on the scanner lid
  • Scratched or damaged scanner glass
  • Poor internal connections
  • Dirt or debris inside the product
  • Damaged or faulty scanner bulb or parts

Black smudge mark down 2 inches of right side of copy?

Do you see the same smudge mark if you lay the original on the platen rather than using the document feeder? If it only shows when using the document feeder, clean the scanning glass for the document feeder. It's the small glass to the left of the main glass with the cover open. Use a damp cloth and clean off any dirt or white-out.

Incomplete text, every other line is messed up.

  • If the scanner glass or the white scan background (the white portion of the lid) are dirty, the scan might be different than intended. A dirty scanner glass (fingerprints or smudges) slows down performance by as much as half a minute and affects scan quality. Performance slows because the product is actually processing the smudges on the glass. Turn off the product , and then clean the glass with a soft cloth or sponge slightly moistened with a nonabrasive glass cleaner. If there are visible contaminants under the scanner glass, the product must be sent in for servicing. You cannot remove the scanner glass to clean inside.
  • Reinitialize the scanner by turning off the product and unplugging the power cord. Make sure that all original documents are removed from the product and that the scanner glass on the product is clean. When the power is reconnected and the product is turned on, the scanner recalibrates.
  • The computer video driver and video settings might change the image appearance slightly. The product scans in 24-bit color. Setting the video display settings to less than 24-bit, or 24 million colors, results in a loss of color information on the computer monitor. The video driver might change the appearance of colors when viewed on the monitor.

    Black vertical lines in copies

You need to clean the glass. Open up the feeder and you have a large piece of glass for scanning and to the left a smaller piece of glass that it uses to scan from the feeder. Clean this smaller piece of glass; even the slightest smudge can leave a black streak.

The problem is not your scanner, is in the rollers, the rollers are smudged with ink or other mateial or your glass is smudge, remove the four star bolts on the top and clean the undersurface of the glas with a conventional glass cleaner wipe and re install the top cover.Be careful with the ribbon cables connected to the circuit board.
