Max amp draw refers to the total amp draw of a unit , example : Compressor RLA 25 Amp, blower motor FLA 5 Amp, and condenser fan motor FLA is 1.5 amp , you add all three and get 31.5 Amps
which is your max amps, this is used in determining wire gauge and breaker size for unit.
This should help.

Air compressor

Usually, motor will draw lower amperage when tank is empty then draw most when about full. High amp draw is caused by long cord, weak capacitor, leaking check valve or blown head gasket/s. If gaskets are bad, the head of the compressor will be very hot and take much longer to fill. If the motor (is too small) is not correctly matched to the pump, the motor will draw max amps. To correct motor to small, use a smaller pulley at the motor. Using a smaller pulley will turn the pump less rpm giving the motor a break lowering amp draw. Good luck

NEW CONDENSER FAN MOTOR DRAW 2.6 AMPS WHEN IS RATED FOR 1.5- 1.8 MAX HOW DO I LOWER THE AMPS ? THIS IS THE SECOND MOTOR WE INSTALL AND THIS OVER AMP DRAW CAUSES THE FUSE TO BLOW

The capacitor may be weak if it has not been changed with the motor, which will cause excessive amp draw. Also may need condensing coil cleaning to reduce static pressure on the fan.
*Some motor ratings do not reflect what is actually needed for proper operation in some cases a higher amp motor is required.

My Altoshaam keeps burning out the on off toggle switch on the top section.

Ok i assume you have the 208-240 model not the 120 model, when you said 2 legs. at 240 volts its max draw is 8.3 amps on each leg, even with the 120v model, the max is 16.0 amps.

so yes your heating coil is defective....so if you have 18 amp draw..that is your problem....

(example. #3 can carry 10 amps) then it is distributed thru breaker thru the wires to the loads amp draw. depends on the maxium rated amp draw of the load, the wire can carry a certain amount of heat or amps. Ceck the max. rated amps or heat draw it can carry to size your wires & breaker,! thank you very much!
