Question about Gateway 3550GZ Notebook

2 Answers

Replacing lcd I have a gateway 3550gz, the screen broke,, small hairline crack in screen, it eventually stopped working all together. I just got a replacement screen, we put it all together just like it was with the original, whaen the laptop starts up the screen is very dark, we mcan hardly msee whats on it. Is there a driver that needs to be downloaded? Why would it be dark like this and not start up like a new bright screen?

The screen was a lcd 3550gz compatible, it looks identical. I tried the function keys and nothing happened. I have not reinstalled the video driver, I dont have any of the cd's that came with it 2 years ago. I took it apart again and made sure the 2 different areas that connect have good contact and they do. The computer boots up and does what its supposed to just the screen is really really dark. I can see whats on the screen but only at a certain angle and its very faint.

Hmmm, When the screen originally broke I had it hooked to an external monitor...which I no longer have. When doing that does it make the screen faint like this? I pushed the function key to go back to laptop screen...it didnt work....?? Am I pushing the wrong button to make it go to original screen?

My friend while i was thinking about ur situation in here this idea just passed by and it could be the reason why ur screen is so black

u know when u close the laptop (not turn off just close it) there is some kind of button maybe that one is always pushed down so ur screen is thinking that its closed so its always dark

just try to take a look at it maybe its jammed inside or there is smthing blocking it down

worth trying

cheers

Is this a common problem , 1 The plastic frame around my screen has a slight hairline crack FROM the bottom left corner of the screen going out . 2 Is this a concern for the laptop .

Hi,
That crack means you have a problem in the HiNGE part.
You have to bring that laptap to a tech and have them replace/repair/lubricate both hinges before it breaks the whole LCD screen support and damages the wiring leading to the LCD.
Gently close the LCD part when closing!

Hope that helps!

Screen has white line that runs length of screen also has dark spots at bottom that looks like ink .

The white line is problem of the LCD's electronic. The spots are places where the liquid crystal is out of order of it's molecules, result of a shock and/or crack. Both problems cannot be fixed and the LCD screen have to be replaced. Take apart the lid and look the partnumber of the LCD on its back. Find replacement on ebay.

Replacing laptop monitor. The new monitor

If it was not the right kind of LCD it may have blown the inverter (where the LCD connects and the cable going to the motherboard). You should order parts only from an authorized Gateway part reseller as advertised on the Gateway website. I have included a link to one such place below, where you can purchase a new inverter board and LCD screen if needed.

hello, this laptop screen is hard to find and we both know why one would not try asking Gateway for price, ;-)
you should try www.lcds4less.com you should be able to get one for less than $200 (new one).
if you don't see the model listed call them anyways often times they have a replacement model that fits you might just have to replace the back cover of the LCD screen to match the color.

i hope this helps.

When I open my laptop the screen becomes green and fuzzy. This is until I move the screen slowly backwards and eventually I hit a spot where it comes back to normal but if I move the screen forward or...

The ribbon cable to the lcd layer (green pixel contact common) is going bad or the connection of the cable to the lcd unit is dirty. It is probably the connection, as the ribbon cable, if installed correctly, will flex many more times than the hinges would be able to (that is, the ribbon cable should outlast the laptop). Sometimes they might not be installed correctly in that there is a hangup or kink of some kind and the bending (each time the laptop is opened and closed) makes it bend beyond the elastic limit of the metal, and it eventually cracks. The problem you have may be cause by the cracked metal in the ribbon cable, and careful placement of the screen makes the cracked trace reconnect by flexing. It could be caused by a bad contact of the cable to the board or (most likely) the screen unit.
If you are inclined, take apart and carefully inspect the ribbon cable for any parts that have a kink in it or is otherwise flexed too much in one small little area. Flex the cable to see if it changes the display. Otherwise, wiggle the ends (careful) to see if it will try to work.
If you find a cracked cable, have it replaced. If the contacts prove to be dirty, unplug or otherwise remove cable end that is dirty and reseat cable after carefully burnishing contacts and using contact grease (smathering only).
