I just bought the NetGear wireless adapter today. the process runs smoothly until it asks me to hook the wireless adapter. A box pops up stating "detecting wireless adapter" it stays like that...

It looks like your NetGear WNA3100 is dead out of the box.
The software looks like it operating correctly (runs the installed diag, tries to detect, etc.), but
the software isn't having any luck finding the hardware.
The reason that the adapter is disabled in Device Management, is that the software seems
to have correctly installed the driver, but Windows couldn't detect (plug & play) the device, so
Windows didn't enable the device driver - Windows won't load a driver for a non-existent device.
Other (remote) possibilities:
(a) Wi-Fi adapter plugged into a bad USB port. - try another port.
(b) there's a little corrosion on USB contacts of USB port or WNA3100. Try plugging adapter
in and out of the port a few times (this shines up the contacts a bit).
(c) there's a slight misalignment of contacts within the USB connector or either the laptop, or
the WNA3100.
Your fix may be returning the NetGear WNA3100 to the retailer for an exchange.

Got this fix off of newegg, and it works for XP

Install the updated software package from Netgear. Go into C:/ Program Files/Netgear/ and copy the Driver folder. Paste to your desktop or wherever.

Uninstall the Netgear software. Plug the wireless adapter back in, let Windows locate, and point it to the XP folder in the drivers folder. You're up and running. ^.^

Using wireless router and wirelss dongle/adaptor on same pc

Sorry to say, but no you can't do WPA/PSK and WEP at the same time from a single wireless router or access point.

The simplest way to accomplish what you want is to buy a simple Wireless Access Point, configure it to use WEP, and run it when your son wants to use his NDS. Leave your existing router on WPA for your computer(s).

Ok, that's really the second-simplest way. The simplest way is to set it to WEP and reconfigure your computer(s) to use WEP instead of WPA, and leave it that way. That drops your security though, so you may not like that solution as much.

I am trying to install a wireless usb adapter. Problem installing driver software "process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process2 please help

Did you have a similar wireless adapter install previous to this one? If the software is similar then you need to uninstall the old software so that you can install the new software. The problem might be the old software version is running and you can't write over a file that is running. You can't delete or overwrite it until that process is closed.

D-Link wireless router and Belkin Wireless G USB Network adapter

Set your wireless network as a preferred network and to automatically connect to it. Also set it at the top of the list so that it takes precedence. If you continue to get conflicts, change the channel of the router.
