Are you using Win98 or Win98 Second Edition? Almost everything USB will tell you to run on Second Edition, not the original Win98.

I can't say for sure either, but experience dictates this is not a USB issue but rather the issue of Win98. Win98 was never designed to see drives over a certain limit. I can't remember what the limit might be simply becasue it has been a very long time since I used it, but it could be easily researched..

Unfortunately there are maximum drive capacity limitations under that operating system, and your simpletech drive might be over the boundaries. Ive heard of Hard Drive size limitations under older motherboards that say you cant go over 139 Gigabytes but I wouldn't see any indication where this limitation would apply to USB connected HD's.

I have a windows 98 system bios and i wish to Put a differnt Hard drive in that has windows xp on it . Is there a way to do this

Hi
It probably won't work. Win 98 machines not only had older BIOS but also the processor was older and most importantly the video was older. XP may just not be able to recognize these parts. In my lab I use an old Dell laptop that was made specifically for Win 98. I was able to install XP but the graphics stay in four color mode as there were no drivers ever written for XP. Also the hard drive with XP was probably formated using NTFS while Windows 98 (unless modified) only recognizes FAT. Good luck and sorry

Error installing windows xp

hi! there, set up exe. that was when your setting up win 98 you have to install that came from floppy disk before you can install win 98.there is an os win 98 in your system you have to delete that previous os before installing another win xp.restart ur computer. press F2 to open your bios set-up . then select bios set-up priority your cd-room drive second, your hard drive. last, quit and save set-up. and then your computer will restart. insert your cd windows xp then reinstall your window xp. delete the previous os then follow the set up on your window xp until you install your new window xp.

I have /had Windows 98 on my computer and a friend installed windows xp. I tried to get rid of Xp but lost Win 98, I have the original RestoreDisk for my compaq but it will not let me install to get back...

Have you tried booting the system with the restore disk, well it should reformat the system before it installs a fresh copy of windows 98 so you should back-up data before proceeding and check the boot sequence in your bios, set the first boot device to CD/DVD.

I hope this helps:)

Install Xp From Dos

If XP will not install from the CD or if you have a new drive with no operating system onit yet try these:

Install Windows XP from the hard drive with Windows 98 already installed:

Boot Windows 98
Insert the XP CD into your CD reader
Explore Windows XP through My Computer
Copy i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder and double click on winnt32.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive

Install Windows XP from DOS (ie. no OS on a new hard drive):

Boot with a Windows 98 Start Up disk
Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD reader
Run smartdrv.exe from the Win98 directory on the windows 98 CD (file caching)
Type cd.. to back up to the root directory
Insert Windows XP CD into the CD reader
Copy the i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder on C: and type winnt.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive.

I have a dell windows 2000 pro and a game i play on xp needs me to install a program i tried on my 2000 and no luck my friend has it on 98 and it works im not allowed to copy my moms xp to my hard drive...

You need to go to the www.dell.com/support and look for a down load for you particular PC OS and game. And also to the game site for a possible patch or download to help you. since We don;t have a lot of info on the game, You might just try this one yourself. If you can;t find what you need, come back with more info and I'll give it another try. Good Luck.

Windows 98 is not opening

You need to re-install Windows 98, and this time, you should do it on a separate hard disk partition.
