Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera

Screen pink and no more focussing

My camera doesn't focus any more and has when I switch it on a violet and a blurred screen. What is wrong? Is it broken? Who has an answer?

    exactly the same problem

  • BobInUK Oct 04, 2008

Same camera and same problem, one day it was fine and the next horrible magenta only images with blurring spreading from the bottom of the frame, the rest of the photos on the memory card were still fine when viewed on the camera display still. No changes in the settings including manual shutter and aperture helped. Eventually I tried setting the white balance to "Custom", initially it made no difference and then I notice the normal colours slowly washing down form the top of the frame!! SO - if I turn on and wait a minute then I can still take reasonable quality photos but I suspect things will rapidly degrade if it is the same CCD problem the camera advisory is on about...

Most likely you have activated the Macro function. Usually this function is illustrated by a flower icon. This function is used to shoot from very small distances. Deactivate the macro function.

I cannot figure put how to correct a blurred image before shooting the pic Help?

Hold the shutter button down half way to automatically adjust the focus.
You should hear a tone and/or see an icon on the screen to tell you it is focussed.
Also, read the instruction manual!

My canon xsi will come out "focused" but when i look through my view finder thing- it is not in focus. do you know what could be wrong?

The viewfinder image focusses onto the ground glass viewfinder screen; your viewfinder image will therefore be out of focus if the screen has moved up or down in relation to where it should be.

Check that the screen is seated properly by removing the lens and looking at the roof of mirror box in the camera body. Usually the screen will have dropped down very slightly and it's held in place by clips to the front and rear. The rear clip is fixed, the front one is a spring clip. Avoid using bare fingers when you manipulate the screen and do not use metal or hard plastic tools on it.

My camera will not focus. I have a 50mm lens and 200mm and neither will focus

Which exact lenses are you trying to use? The N2000 (aka F301) is a manual focus camera so if you're trying to use autofocus lenses you have to focus them manually. Sorry if this seems an insulting suggestion, but you did state "my camera will not focus" and I've learned that on FixYa it's best not to assume any prior level of knowledge with regard to those who post questions.

The next thing to check is whether the viewfinder has an eyecup attached, if so slide it upwards to remove it as sometimes they have a corrective lens fitted if the previous user needed corrective optics. If your vision is fine (with glasses/contact lenses if necessary) then a corrective lens on the viewfinder may make things look blurry.

Other than that, the only other possible cause (other than a pair of broken lenses) is if the focussing screen has become dislodged downwards (or somehow fitted upside-down) then the viewfinder image will be unsharp. Officially the F301/N2000 had a fixed focussing screen but it could be replaced with one of three designed for the higher specified F501 (which does have autofocus), and if not seated correctly you'd get the focussing issue you describe.

You can test if the focussing screen is the problem in one of two ways:-
1. A visual inspection (you may need to get a more experienced photographer to take a look at it);

2. Set the lens to focus at infinity and at the widest possible aperture and take a photograph of a distant object (ignoring the blurred viewfinder). process the film and inspect the photo. If it's sharp then you have a focussing screen problem. If not, then it's a lens problem.

If the problem is a poorly fitted focussing screen then it may just need reseating or to be removed and refitted. It's vital to do this in a dust free environment and to avoid getting fingerprints on the screen. Some screens sit in a hinged frame which then clips into place when pushed up, others push into a pair of clips towards the top rear and then the front is held in place by a spring clip: it's been a long while since I worked on the F501 or F301 so I don't recall which system is used.

Pentax k1000 ....lens will not focus...(one 50mm...other 70-210mm)...happened once before...brought to camera store and of course it focused...nothing wrong...took some pics and worked ok...now not...

Try this first.

Set your lens focus to infinity and focus your screen at a far away object (like a distant lampost). If it,s not in focus, then you have a misaligned mirror. Adjust your mirror so that a infinity setting, the split-screen image merge well to form a well focussed image. Hope that helps.

Black particles on focusingscreen

If the specks are just on your viewfinder focussing screen, they won't be on your pics. If they're on both your pics and focussing screen, you need to find someone else to clean your camera. Cleaning either your CCD sensor or your screen yourself can leave scratches. Changing lenses often can suck dust into the inside if the body is dusty. Try another repair shop for thorough cleaning - it shouldn't cost more than $50.

Blurred Picture in the shooting mode

one of the possible cause of the said problem can be a defective or broken flex ribbion cable carrying signal to the focus motor. the replacement of the flex will solve the problem. othe may be friction in the focus assembly. cleaning of the same will do the job. but in both the cases you will need the help of repair shop.
